It might be time for Republicans to start worrying about their House majority

Much of the professional political class within the Republican Party has resigned itself to the likelihood that Donald Trump will lose the presidential race to Hillary Clinton. The operative question now for this group is whether a Trump loss could cost Republicans their majorities in Congress.

For a very long time, the idea of the House being in play was treated as a Democratic pipe dream. After all, Republicans control 247 seats — their highest watermark since 1928. And because Republicans controlled lots and lots of the congressional redistricting processes after the 2010 Census, the country's congressional seats tend to be solidly aligned behind one party or the other. The number of truly competitive districts in the country is, maybe, two dozen.

But, as Trump's numbers — nationally and in key swing states — continue to tank, a creeping fear has taken root within the Republican establishment that maybe, just maybe, a landslide loss at the top of the ticket could cost the party not only the upper chamber of Congress but the lower one, too.

If the Repubs are smart, this is exactly what they are doing.

It will be one of the few things that can keep a grip on a bad presidency, provided that Congress is not primarily neocons.

Interesting times.......

There is a good chance Trump causes them to lose the house when he suffers his inevitable loss. GOP primary voters have shown very little foresight this cycle.

No way, not gonna happen. The Senate, maybe, but not the House.

We all said the same thing about Trump in the primary.

I think there is a threshold, but it is steeper than the OP article. House GOP candidates in R+5 districts will probably stay safe unless Trump loses that district by 8 or more.

No, some fools said that Trump couldn't win the primary. They also said he hit his ceiling very step of the way of him destroying Jeb! and company. In the same way right now you have in your head that Trump can't beat Hillary, but in a few months you will likely be shaking your head and saying you don't understand how he won. Some people just don't have a clear vision of what is happening.

Good. Let them pass a new AWB. That's going to go over great.

Either way we win. If Trump wins, we win by provoking these devils to do something extremely dumb. In the event, Trump gets demolished we win, since they will likely choke on their incoming power grab. They will radicalize millions of normies (see the creeping hints about negative interest rates).

Except all the polls had Trump winning the primary. The same polls that now show him losing badly in the general election.

Not in the early stages.

It might be time for Republicans to start worrying about their House majority

The damage has done, long before this cycle.
