Last week, Ilhan Omar made national headlines after her historic win over longtime Rep. Phyllis Kahn and fellow Somali-American Mohamud Noor in the DFL primary race for House District 60B. In the heavily Democratic district, the primary victory put the 33-year-old mother of three in position to become the first Somali-American elected to a state legislature anywhere in the United States.

A little more than week later, however, she found herself on the hot seat after conservative blog Power Line questioned whether Omar was married to two men: Ahmed Nur Said Elmi and Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children. (http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2016/08/ilhan-omar-her-back-pages.php)

The Star Tribune then followed up, looking into Omar’s marital records, which revealed that Omar has been legally married to Elmi since 2009, and that she has never been legally married to Hirsi. Yet the paper also found that there was no evidence to support another of the charges raised in Power Line’s original report, that Elmi is Omar’s brother.

Given the murky nature of the story, here is an FAQ about the many questions the episode has raised: about Omar, immigration, marriage licenses and Somali-American culture in Minnesota:

So what’s the latest — what does Omar say?

Late Wednesday, Omar’s campaign issued a "response from Omar" statement on her website that sought to clear up the questions about her marital status and finally put the matter to rest:

In 2002, when I was 19 years old, Ahmed Hirsi (whose name before he received citizenship was Ahmed Aden), the father of my children and love of my life, and I, applied for a marriage license, but we never finalized the application and thus were never legally married. In 2008, we decided to end our relationship in our faith tradition after reaching an impasse in our life together.

I entered into a relationship with a British citizen, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, and married him legally in 2009. Our relationship ended in 2011 and we divorced in our faith tradition. After that, he moved home to England. I have yet to legally divorce Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, but am in the process of doing so. Insinuations that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is my brother are absurd and offensive.

Since 2011, I am happy to say that I have reconciled with Ahmed Hirsi, we have married in our faith tradition and are raising our family together. Like all families, we have had our ups and downs but we are proud to have come through it together.

Omar’s statement references getting married “in our faith tradition.” What exactly does that refer to?

We don't know any details about Omar's marriage, but there are common traditions in both Somali and Muslim culture when it comes to getting married. For one thing, respected elders and religious leaders traditionally play a key role in the process. In fact, when a man and woman decide to marry, the man sends his male relatives and elders to the woman’s family to ask for permission to marry her. The woman’s family then begins the vetting process of the man: Is he able to provide for the woman? Does he come from a good family? Does he have a clean criminal record? Is he a practicing Muslim who embraces his Somali culture and religion?

To find these answers, the family members seek out other Somalis in the area to learn about the man. And because Somalis make up such a tight-knit community, that process can expose anyone’s back-story quickly – often in a matter of hours.

If the man survives the vetting process, the marrying partners privately agree upon an amount of merh — a payment, often in the form of money — the groom or his family will give to the bride.

The two families then organize the nikah — a marriage ceremony — where elderly men representing the groom ask other elders from the woman’s family for her hand. In Minnesota, such ceremonies often take place at community halls around the metro area, and may include as many as 200 witnesses to the ceremony, officiated by local imams.

At this point, the two are married according to Islamic custom. Many couples, however, decide to host Western-style wedding parties in closing to celebrate the months-long marriage process.

So what about a marriage license?

After such a long and expensive process, many young couples in the Somali-American community just don't look beyond their traditional marriage.

Some aren’t aware that their marriage isn’t complete until they receive a signed marriage certificate from the state. For others, the traditional marriage consumes so much time and energy that they don’t have the desire, or see the need, to apply for a marriage license, which was never required in Somalia.

Other couples, who may want to legalize their marriage according to the state’s marriage laws, mistakenly assume that they have to go in front of a Christian minister to get a state license.

What about the allegation that Elmi was Omar’s brother? Where does that come from?

Well, we should reiterate that Omar has unequivocally stated that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is not her brother, calling the allegation “absurd and ridiculous.”

The nature of the charge is easy to trace, however, and stems from the fact that immigration authorities give priority to U.S. citizens who request to bring in their noncitizen spouses to the United States. In practical terms, the immigration process for nonresidents can be cut by years if they are sponsored by citizen spouses.

Not surprisingly, there are examples of those who misuse the law. Instead of using the visa to bring their spouses, they fabricate marriage to get their siblings or other relatives living in foreign countries into the U.S.

That’s illegal, of course, and carries the potential for serious criminal consequences for both the sponsored immigrant and the petitioner. “Any individual who knowingly enters into a marriage for the purpose of evading any provision of the immigration laws shall be imprisoned for not more than five years, or fined not more than $250,000, or both,” writes Ilona Bray of Nola, a California-based company that specializes in immigration law and real estate.

DECEMBER 25, 2018

WASHINGTON – Ilhan Omar will be sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives at a time when liberal-leaning newcomers like her are pushing for more influence in shaping the party’s agenda.

Since the midterm elections, the Congressional Progressive Caucus has negotiated with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for its members — particularly freshmen — to have more committee chairmanships and spots on powerful panels usually reserved for more seasoned members, such as Ways and Means.

This wave of enthusiasm is creating a big opening for incoming freshmen like Omar, who are usually relegated to less influential committee assignments. It’s also altering the dynamics of Congress, where the roughly 95 members of the new progressive caucus will have the largest voting bloc among House Democrats.

Omar was recently elected to a leadership role in the caucus, a position that will give her more influence, but that is nearly certain to draw more criticism.

“Top Democratic leaders have proactively sought conversations with Ilhan Omar and some other progressive stars to make sure that their views are firmly at the table,” said Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which endorsed Omar. She attended the group’s legislative training in 2015. “I think it’s an acknowledgment that they have such a large voice and bully pulpit right now, and the ability to drive the national debate.”

Omar told the Star Tribune that her early priorities will include an infrastructure package — funding roads, bridges and broadband internet — and a measure that would institute publicly funded political campaigns and automatic voter registration. She’s also advocating for a proposed constitutional amendment to undo the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling that allows corporations and labor unions the right to spend unlimited money in political campaigns.

“For us, it’s really about making sure that the rules allow for us to be able to push our progressive agenda and have that become policy,” said Omar.

Omar, who served one term in the Legislature representing a diverse district in Minneapolis, is already striking out on a different path in Congress than the other new Democratic members from Minnesota, Dean Phillips and Angie Craig. They are members of the more moderate, pro-business New Democrat Coalition.

Omar will replace six-term U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, who is stepping down from Congress to become Minnesota’s next attorney general. Omar described Ellison as “like a big brother to me.”

Ellison said that when he entered Congress in 2007, the progressive caucus was a group of lawmakers who held similar ideals but didn’t act in a coordinated way to build relationships with their base and get other progressives elected. He helped strengthen the organization and served as co-chair in 2011 and 2017. The caucus meets at least weekly, has built relationships with activists and spent $1.3 million through its Progressive Action PAC this election cycle to help elect like-minded candidates.

“The progressive caucus is a stronger organization than ever before, and so [Omar] is going into an organization which is in a better position to set policy than ever before,” Ellison said.

Omar and other new progressives backed Pelosi’s bid for House speaker amid opposition from more centrist Democrats.

Ellison said he believes the progressive caucus will command the attention of leadership more than ever, but current political realities could make that a bumpy ride.

“Nancy may sincerely want to help the progressive agenda, but if she needs votes from [more conservative] Blue Dogs, she’s going to have to adjust, and that’s just the way it is, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” said Ellison.

During freshman orientation last month, Omar drew social media buzz with a photo on Instagram with three other incoming progressive women of color: Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. It ran with the hashtag “squad,” signifying the greater diversity of the new class in Congress.

But some challenges are already emerging. Omar drew national attention for attacks on her Muslim faith. Her move to change a House rule so she could wear a hijab on the floor prompted the Rev. E.W. Jackson to say that the floor of Congress would look like an Islamic republic.

“I am much more interested in defending my ideas than defending my identities,” said Omar.

Some freshman lawmakers have already formed political alliances because they represent similar constituencies, “and some of us who are ‘firsts’ also have this camaraderie and solidarity built into the struggle of trying to have our voices be heard, so there is a really amazing vibe happening with the freshman class,” Omar said.

Omar is already taking interest in additional issues, like pushing to address soaring student debt, gun control legislation and a larger campaign to expand Medicare coverage. It’s a daunting agenda, full of issues that have stymied far more seasoned members of Congress.

There’s a push “to make sure that we have members within the freshman class represented in the powerful, exclusive committees, and I think there is a huge possibility that we’re going to have real successes,” said Omar.

“Not everyone is in lockstep on every issue, but when you have that many members, that’s a very powerful block and you can really influence legislation that will hit the floor,” said U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan, a Wisconsin Democrat who’s co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

While Omar’s top issues might fuse nicely with the interests of other Democrats, they face a formidable wall of opposition from Republicans.

“Our major problem isn’t fellow Democrats,” said Pocan. “Our major problem is going to be a Republican Senate and a Republican White House.”

Now that the Democratic Party is putting Muslim immigrants and their children in Congress, they’re feeling a bit bold. Or at least bold enough to feel secure in ridiculing Christians. And not just any Christians, but one Christian in particular: Vice President Mike Pence.

Representative-elect Ilhan Omar (shown), the immigrant Somali Muslim elected from Minnesota’s 5th district, tweeted a nasty attack on Pence, apparently because he didn’t think it necessary to speak during the meeting earlier this week between President Trump and her party’s two leaders, incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Another Muslim congresswoman, the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, liked the tweet.
So at least two members of Islam’s congressional delegation are united in their disdain for the religion of most Americans.
It’s not a place where this pair ought to go given their own dubious résumés.

The Tweet
You wouldn’t think a Muslim immigrant lucky enough to find herself in Congress would ridicule the vice president before she is even sworn in, but alas, for Democrats, decorum is off the table.
Omar poked at Pence after Trump put Pelosi and Schumer in their place (https://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/item/30892-trump-says-wall-improvements-stopping-illegals-threatens-gov-shutdown-if-dems-deny-funding) on Tuesday, the Conservative News Service reported (https://www.cnsnews.com/blog/patrick-goodenough/incoming-muslim-congresswomen-mock-pences-christian-faith?fbclid=IwAR0_Y_T6smgSCT4nC8wH5SiFyo6iRQHuYoZ eyHanPfUkTzGDZ2yYGCKEaW8#utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cns&utm_campaign=b-IncomingMuslimRepsMockPencesChristianFaith). Calling Schumer’s bluff to shut down the part of the government over funding for a border wall, Trump said he’ll wear the “mantle” proudly because Americans need border security.
“Jesus take the wheel! #BorderWall,” the anti-Israel congresswoman tweeted (https://twitter.com/IlhanMN/status/1072617704912289793) with a photo of Pence, eyes shut. The obvious takeaway: He’s asleep. He’s out of it. He needs help.
https://www.thenewamerican.com/images/ArticleBanners/Screenshot_2018-12-13_Ilhan_Omar_on_Twitter.jpg
What’s more, CNS reported (https://www.cnsnews.com/blog/patrick-goodenough/incoming-muslim-congresswomen-mock-pences-christian-faith?fbclid=IwAR0_Y_T6smgSCT4nC8wH5SiFyo6iRQHuYoZ eyHanPfUkTzGDZ2yYGCKEaW8#utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cns&utm_campaign=b-IncomingMuslimRepsMockPencesChristianFaith), another newly elected Muslim, Rashida Tlaib, “liked” the tweet. She, too, apparently, thinks Pence’s religion is fair game for ridicule.
Leftists have made sport of Pence’s beliefs for some time, not least his firm rule not to be alone with women to whom he is not married. Kook feminists believe a man who takes his marriage vow that seriously “hurts women (https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2017/03/pences-gender-segregated-dinners/521286/)” and “keeps women from power (https://www.newyorker.com/culture/jia-tolentino/mike-pences-marriage-and-the-beliefs-that-keep-women-from-power).”
Now Muslims have joined the act.

Their Past
Aside from arguing against (https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/11/21/justice-democrat-ilhan-omar-opposed-law-to-ban-female-genital-mutilation/) a bill in Minnesota that would have increased penalties for female genital mutilation, the brutal Islamic practice of clitorectomy, Omar also married her brother, news reports allege (https://pjmedia.com/davidsteinberg/official-school-records-support-claims-that-rep-ilhan-omar-d-mn-married-her-brother/), to commit immigration fraud.
Multiple reports say the evidence is incontrovertible. Omar calls (https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2018/10/ilhan-omars-disgusting-lies.php) the claim “disgusting lies,” yet has refused to answer questions about it even from the leftist Associated Press, which published a detailed report about the serious allegation in October. Reported AP (https://www.apnews.com/cc2ccd70de56405098d2f259bf0e46c5), “Omar broadly denied the allegations in a statement ... but declined to provide documents or answer specific questions when pressed.”
And that’s that. An immigrant woman who stands credibly accused of immigration fraud, a federal crime, now represents the 5th District of Minnesota.
But that isn’t all. Omar shills for radical Islam. She’s tight as a tick with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (https://www.discoverthenetworks.org/organizations/council-on-americanislamic-relations-cair/), Discover the Networks has reported (https://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individuals/ilhan-omar), which has ties to some of the most notorious terrorists in the world, not least the Hamas terror outfit.

The child of Palestinian immigrants, Tlaib is a democratic socialist, DTN has reported (https://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individuals/rashida-tlaib/), who will represent Michigan’s 13th district. She raised money door-to-door for her campaign with Linda Sarsour (https://www.discoverthenetworks.org/individuals/linda-sarsour/), the anti-Semite and terror apologist on the board of Women’s March (https://www.womensmarch.com/team/).
All three women support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement (https://www.discoverthenetworks.org/organizations/boycott-divestment-sanctions-movement-bds/), an anti-Israel effort inspired by the Hamas terror organization.
And Tlaib has not only raised thousands from Islamic terror apologists such CAIR but also, DTN reported, “draped herself in a Palestinian flag while celebrating with her supporters” after she won the Democratic primary in August.
Like Omar, Tlaib has hammered (https://twitter.com/rashidatlaib/status/1068321710791950337?lang=en) Israel on Twitter, if only implicitly. One of Tlaib’s supporters explained the new congresswoman (https://twitter.com/elmirana/status/1027923048240959489) this way: “There has never been a fight for justice that Rashida has shied away from. The first fight was for Palestine, always Palestine.”
The voters in Michigan’s 13th District thought the fight was for them.
