Gary Johnson beating Donald Trump among voters under 35 in Colorado

DENVER -- Do you think this election is just between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump? If the answer is yes, you would be wrong.

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson now has 16 percent support among Coloradans in the latest Quinnipiac poll.

Additionally, the poll gives Johnson an 11 point lead over Donald Trump with voters 18-34. Hillary Clinton still leads in both categories in the poll.

"Gary Johnson's campaign is the only one gaining steam the other two are dying day-by-day," Steve Kerbel, a spokesman with the campaign in Colorado, said.

"Governor Johnson likes to say most people are libertarian they just don't know it yet," Kerbel added.

Kerbel expects Johnson to campaign in Colorado very soon -- as the campaign is focused on gaining enough national support to make the presidential debate stage. Johnson needs 15 percent nationwide to qualify.

Johnson, the former Governor of New Mexico, is fiscally conservative but socially liberal -- advocating for issues like gay marriage and legal marijuana. Johnson promotes small government and is even threatening to abolish the IRS if elected.

So how does Governor Johnson become President? It is a long-shot but the most likely scenario involves Johnson winning one state with Clinton and Trump both failing to get the necessary 270 electoral votes to be President. In that event, the House of Representatives would pick the Commander in Chief and since Clinton and Trump are disliked by many in the House, Johnson would fit the void.

A long-shot -- yes. But not impossible in this election year.

Currently, Johnson has not officially qualified for the November ballot in Colorado although the campaign expects it to very soon.
