Paul reports more than $2 million, leading Senate challenger

Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul leads Democratic challenger Jim Gray by $1.1 million as both campaigns begin accelerating ahead of the November general election.

Paul raised more than $1.2 million in the fundraising quarter that ended June 30. The haul is in addition to the more than $97,000 Paul raised in the one-month period leading up to the May primary, giving the first-term Senator more than $2.2 million in cash available to spend from his campaign account.

Lexington Mayor Jim Gray raised more than $1.1 million during the same time period, leaving him with just over $1 million in cash available to spend.

It was the first million dollar quarter for Paul, whose Senate campaign fundraising got off to a slow start this year because of his competing presidential campaign. Paul ended his presidential bid in February to focus on his re-election efforts.

Gray, the mayor of Lexington who owns a successful construction company, reported $1.7 million in his first disclosure report in April. But $1 million of that was a loan from himself. Gray has not given himself any other loans since then.
