by Ken Meyer | 9:53 am, July 27th, 2016
The man who nearly killed President Ronald Reagan in 1981 has been granted his freedom from a mental hospital.
A federal judge in Washington D.C. has ruled this morning that John Hinckley Jr. will be allowed to live full-time with his mother as early as next week. The judge said Hinckley must live with his mother in Williamsburg, Va. for at least a year, after which point, he will be allowed to live alone or with others under the continued observance of his psychiatric treatment team.
The terms of Hinckley’s release state that he is forbidden to contact his victims, their relatives or actress Jodie Foster. It was Hinckley’s obsession with Foster that motivated him to try to famously kill the former president.
Reagan and press secretary James Brady both survived the attack, and Hinckley was found not guilty in court by reason of insanity. Hinkley has been granted increasing levels of freedom from the hospital since 2003, and Saint Elizabeths Hospital has stated that he no longer appears to be a threat to himself or others.
