After Orlando Massacre, Kentucky Republican Pushes For Open Carry In D.C.

Residents of Kentucky can openly carry handguns without a permit, and now a Republican representative from the Bluegrass State wants D.C. residents to enjoy the same right.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) this week introduced two gun-related amendments to a federal spending bill, one that would allow residents and visitors to openly carry handguns without a permit and a second that would do away with the city's gun-free zones — the 1,000-foot buffer zones around schools, universities, pools, playgrounds, and public housing where carrying a gun carries a stiffer penalty.

The amendments will be formally introduced on Tuesday afternoon, when the House Rules Committee considers all proposed changes to the fiscal 2017 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act, which allocates local and federal funds for D.C.

In an email to WAMU 88.5, Massie said the amendments are intended to prevent an Orlando-style tragedy in the nation's capital.

"Gun control is not the solution. The only practical way to have prevented this tragedy is by eliminating gun-free zones where security is inadequate to protect law abiding citizens who are otherwise capable, willing, and endowed (by their Creator with the right) to defend themselves," said Massie. "I introduced these amendments to reduce the likelihood of a similar tragedy in D.C.”

This isn't the first time that Massie has gotten involved in D.C.'s gun laws. Two years ago, he introduced an amendment that would have gutted the city's restrictive gun laws. The House of Representatives passed a bill that included Massie's measure, but it was later removed by the Senate.

looks like House leadership shut it down

Rep. Thomas Massie Irked That GOP-Dominated House Rules Committee Killed Amendments to Defund D.C. Gun Laws

Despite today's sit-in by Democrats in the House of Representatives advocating some action to further restrict Americans' Second Amendment rights, today Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) says that he very much doubts any new anti-gun action will issue from a Congress with both houses controlled by Republicans.

But this week he's more worried about pro-gun action that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) and his leadership team seems reluctant to get to the floor. Despite an initial promise of continuing an open process for allowing amendments to come to the floor for a vote, Ryan changed his tune and now has a "structured" process whereby the Rules Committee can prevent amendments from making the floor. Massie complained about this change to Huffington Post earlier this month.

Massie this week saw the Rules Committee choke two of his proposed amendments to the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act intended to prevent the District of Columbia from damaging its citizens Second Amendment rights. Massie is pretty sure that's just because leadership thinks it can't help and only hurt certain possibly vulnerable Republican House seats in November to put its members on record on the matter.

The amendments would have defunded D.C. efforts to enforce gun-free zones and its permit requirements for concealed carry in the District.

As of this morning, Massie had not been told there was any parliamentary errors in the way they were crafted; he has reason to believe they just got smacked down because the Rules Committee, which is 9-4 Republican, didn't want to make the House think about them.

Massie has been saying in interviews that under Boehner, he was actually able to get votes on legislation. Ryan's puppet committees have control over what gets votes now.

He actually liked Ryan better than Boehner at first, but I guess that changed with some of the crap Ryan has been pulling lately (discussed in the 2nd half of video below).

I think he tried to be gracious towards Ryan initially, but he always opposed him being speaker. Massie is the smartest one up there, and certainly the most principled and bold.

He definitely is all of those. On a related note relevant to the subject of this thread, seems he is very well-liked for those qualities on this gun site I came across.
