DEVELOPING: A SWAT team shot and killed a suspect who took hostages at a Walmart in Amarillo, Texas Tuesday afternoon, investigators confirmed.

The Randall County Sheriff's Office announced the gunman was dead. City officials first reported an "active shooter incident" at 12:30 p.m. local time.

"We do consider this a work-place violence situation at this point," the sheriff's office said. One store employee told KFDA the gunman earlier released a worker and the store manager but was still inside the Walmart.

Witnesses told KVII an employee took another employee hostage.

Police said they were looking for a Somali man wearing khaki pants, KFDA added. Officers reportedly were evacuating shoppers from the west side of the store in the Texas Panhandle.

Jeff Nunn, the president of a nearby bank, told the Amarillo Globe-News that helicopters and roughly 20 police and emergency vehicles rushed to the store. His bank and a day care center reportedly went on lockdown.

Police closed nearby streets off I-27. "Please avoid the area so that officers can focus on the scene and not traffic," the Amarillo Police Dept. said in a statement.

A man who took two co-workers hostage at an Amarillo, Texas, Walmart Tuesday was a Muslim refugee from Somalia, and that fact came as no surprise to those who track the federal government’s robust refugee resettlement program.

Amarillo is bursting at the seams with foreign refugees, from Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and its mayor has pleaded repeatedly with the government to stop sending refugees to his city . . .

On Tuesday, it was just another example. Mohammad Moghaddan, a Somali refugee, was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies after he had taken two Walmart employees hostage.

Moghaddan, 54, was a current employee of the store, and his actions were quickly declared “a case of work place violence” by the sheriff’s office. The hostage taker, armed with a handgun, was shot dead by a SWAT team as terrified shoppers were ushered out of the store.

The city’s mayor has been on a crusade since 2011 to get the U.S. State Department, working with the United Nations, to put a damper on the number of refugees flooding into his city.

I can't imagine the frozen food section being the most undesirable department in the store. From the photo's I've seen, I would guess it was the women's lingerie section.

On Tuesday Moghaddam went to work in the frozen food section of Walmart at 4215 Canyon Drive. Police said he had been anticipating a promotion. The extra money would have helped his family tread water amid their financial troubles. He was passed over in favor of another worker and rather than go back to the frozen food section, he got a gun.
