Jones fends off challengers, will face Reeves in November

U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr. fended off two challengers on Tuesday to secure the Republican nomination for the 3rd Congressional District seat.

Jones will face the winner of the Democratic primary — Ernest Reeves, a retired U.S. Army captain from Greenville — in November’s election. Reeves on Tuesday defeated David Allan Hurst, a retired restaurateur and Democratic Party activist from Newport, with nearly 55 percent of the vote to secure the Democratic nomination.

Reeves, 51, has twice campaigned for the U.S. Senate and has ran for the mayor of Greenville. Reeves said one of his top priorities if elected will be working to raise the federal minimum wage.

“I believe that this is one of the most important things we can do,” Reeves said. ”I would like to see the minimum wage increased to $10.25 an hour by 2017 and up to $15 an hour by 2020. There are a lot of families that need this income.”

Ernest T. Reeves, Captain, United States Army Retired:

Nicknamed “ETR,” is a retired United States Army Communications Officer (Signal Corps, U.S. Army Pentagon) entrepreneur, and business owner.

Originally from Greenville North Carolina, he is a graduate of J.H. Rose, Sr. High School and the twelfth child of the late Alfred (a Professional Lawn Care Owner) and Lena Reeves (a Stay At Home Mom). As a little boy he became interested in politics partly as a result of his father’s outstanding longtime lawn care business relationship with Dr. John P. East (Professor, Politician) who became U.S. Senator John P. East (R-NC). As U.S. Senator, Dr. East (R-NC) continued his outstanding longtime business relationship with his father and in 1982 he was advised by Senator East’s Special Assistant (by phone) and later in person by Senator East (R-NC) about cadet training opportunities at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School, Fort Monmouth New Jersey and West Point Military Academy, New York.

In 2006, he moved back to Greenville, North Carolina to spend more time with his relatives, go back to college, and start his own business. In 2012, he started Jesusa Coffee, LLC and Jesusa Entertainment, LLC. However, both were put on hold after a proposed location business agreement could not be reached and his uncle became ill. From March 2012 through March 2014 he served as power of attorney and attorney in fact for his uncle who died in March 2014.

In May 2014 he ran for the U.S. Senate to represent North Carolina. He sought the Democratic nomination in the primary, but was defeated by incumbent U.S. Senator Kay Hagan. He received 43,257 votes throughout the state of North Carolina. In November 2015 he ran for Mayor of Greenville, North Carolina, but was defeated by Incumbent Mayor Allen Thomas. Moreover, In March of 2016 he ran for the U.S. Senate to represent North Carolina, but was defeated by U.S. Senate Candidate Deborah Ross. He received more than 91,000 votes across the state of North Carolina.

REEVES FOR U.S. CONGRESS VIEWS & ISSUES CITY-STATE-FEDERAL

Communities & Education: I support strong (safe) communities, great schools, good paying jobs, tax breaks for small businesses, lower tuition costs for students, safe zones for our kids, apprenticeship programs for unemployed individuals, and a robust transportation system.

Healthcare: I support The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly called the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or "Obamacare.” In my opinion it is one of the best pieces of legislation ever enacted into law because it is good for America -- it is not perfect -- but no citizen of this great country should have go broke just to get well!

Medicaid: I wholeheartedly support the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion. Medicaid expansion will provide health insurance coverage to nearly 500,000 low-income North Carolinians and reduce the state’s unequal gap in access to affordable health care (news media). The ACA Medicaid expansion overall pays for itself. For three years, the federal government will pay 100 percent of the cost of people who enroll in an expansion. The federal government support would drop in phases after the first three years, down to 90 percent by 2020. “Expanding Medicaid means fewer uninsured North Carolinians, which will save money for the state and for local governments. According to the NC Institute of Medicine Medicaid brief, the state would save $65.4 million over the first eight years of expansion. Medicaid expansion will also bring more than $15 billion in federal funds to the state. This money flows to health care providers and into local economies, boosting spending and employment. Estimates indicate that Medicaid expansion will create 25,000 new jobs in North Carolina.”

Medicare: I am a strong advocate for seniors and good healthcare. I support a bipartisan effort to strengthen Medicare for years to come.

Military: I am a strong advocate of the military, military families, and veterans. I believe that America is at her best when our military is strong and capable of rapid deployments within a safe and timely manner. I m not in favor deploying large number of troops to any area unless it is absolutely necessary. I believe that our interests are better served with smaller, faster, lethal units that can get in and out of an area of operation within a prescribed timeframe. Finally, I do not favor Congress cutting benefits for our troops, retirees, or veterans as a “political maneuver or game.”

Veterans: I support an improved Veterans Administration (VA) Claims Process -- some of our veterans have been waiting for more than two years for a decision on their claims. I do not think that it is right or fair to ask our men and women to serve this great nation during peacetime, leave their families, go to war and when they get out make them wait years to receive an answer on their claims for benefits.

Social Security: I believe that Congress needs to act sooner rather than later on the question surrounding the solvency of the Social Security Trust Fund (2033). If the fund does not have enough money, then Congress needs to act quickly to ensure that the fund is solvent for years to come without partisan bickering. If necessary, Congress should start a new improved social security program (trust fund) for younger individuals.

Voting Rights: I believe that the U.S. Congress should intervene to ensure that all citizens in all states have a right to vote in all federal, state, and local elections without interference from State Governors and Legislatures.

Unemployment Insurance: I do not favor North Carolina’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) Program. I think that it is completely wrong to cut UI payments from $535.00 (maximum of fifteen weeks) to $350 (maximum of twelve weeks). Benefits can be paid in most states for a maximum of 26 weeks.
