Record Gun Sales Continue Through May

http://www.infowars.com/record-gun-sales-continue-through-may/

The FBI completed a record 1,870,000 checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, this May, according to an agency report. That’s almost 300,000 more checks than May of 2015, which set a record at the time.

It is also nearly a million more checks than May 2008.

May was also the first month in 2016 that did not break two million checks as the gun industry enters a seasonal lull in sales. The numbers remain on pace to set another yearly record, however.

I will now patiently await the arrival of Zippy, who will proceed to tell me I'm all wet: that five paranoiacs living in a Wyoming Quonset hut are buying all these guns.

He will then produce a graph of people who self identify as owning a gun/having a gun in the home, that shows a decreasing trend.

The number of background checks performed does not translate into an exact number of guns sold. That’s because background checks are not performed on a specific gun, but on a specific buyer. A buyer who passes a check can buy multiple firearms, if he so chooses.

In other words, the 1,870,000 background checks in May could mean exactly 1,870,000 guns were sold at retail but it could just as easily mean the number of guns sold was 3,740,000–if everyone who passed a background check purchased two firearms.

Little confused about the "record" thing.

The FBI completed a record 1,870,000 checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, this May, according to an agency report.

But it was the lowest month of the year so far.

Also no idea of how many background checks were rejected vs passed.

Dip in NICS checks suggest fewer gun sales in May

Background checks for May are still highest on record but a deeper reading of the data suggests fewer gun sales for the month, according to figures released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A flat 1.87 million checks were processed by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in May 2016, but more than half the total checks were identified as permits, leaving 937,833 checks as likely gun sales.

The adjusted figure is on par with last year’s 918,707, a difference of 19,126 checks. Although NICS checks do not directly translate into gun sales, the industry uses the system as a barometer for transactions.

While the raw figure is down by about 280,000 from April, the figure is still roughly 290,000 more than last May and continuing a record-setting pace for 2016. So far this year, the FBI reported 11.7 million checks, or 2.8 million more than this time last year.

Of the checks, 512,406 were for handguns, 315,716 for long guns, 15,726 for “other,” meaning frames or firearms that are not handgun nor long guns, and leaving 93,985 for miscellaneous transactions.

May is a slow month.

This May set a record number of sales compared to previous years.
