View Full Version : NSF Spends $1M to Discover if Bee Stings are Worse on Nose or Penis

Meanwhile, some $1 million in NSF money was spent on the grant that involved studying where it hurts most to be stung by a bee. The penis turned out to be only third-worst out of 25 options, falling behind nose and upper lip. Of course, the researcher helpfully noted, it was just a single-subject study so it’s not clear how generalizable his results were.

Please, can we JUST SAY NO?

Gov/Money must grow on trees... Oh yea, it does.
Doing good by spending it all the time must feel great!

I think this raises a valid and urgent question, two actually, slightly unrelated but equally important to find answers to;

1)Do you believe the results to be true ?

2)How much would they have to pay you ?

1. Yes
2. Oh, I don't know...$1 million federally subsidized dollars?

Their subject must be a needle dick.

What the....? So one person was subjected to bee stings on various parts of his body? I hope at least half the money went to the victim of pseudo scientific torture study volunteer.

The researcher and the subject are probably the same person.

Not until the swelling went down.

Was running one day and a bee went in my mouth. It stung my tongue and that was not pleasant. Tasted like some kind of laboratory chemical was on my tongue too.

Some people are into that sort of thing.

FWIW: I can confirm that getting stung on the ass by a scorpion hurts like hell. I didn't get paid for it though. :(

And I can confirm that the sting from a Tarantula Hawk in the back of the neck hurts a bit. I hear the sting of the bullet ant is worse...

The stinger of a female Pepsis grossa can be up to 7 mm (1⁄4 in) long, and the sting is considered the second most painful insect sting in the world; the most painful being that of the bullet ant. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula_hawk)

This seems more valid than most grant studies money . Glad to see things are improving .

So a sadist and a masochist all wrapped up into one.

You seriously got stung by one of them? Those monsters scare the heck out of me. Hope never to learn for myself how bad the sting is.

$1 million may be a bit high but you can't put a price on science.

Feels like a red-hot needle being stabbed into you. But then it kind of numbs the area. I didn't have any allergic reaction, so it was pretty much gone by the next day. The wasp did not survive. ;)

A coworker got hit by an assassin bug. He was in serious pain. I'd never even noticed them or heard about them before. Now I seem to see them everywhere.
