A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a woman’s car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.

Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.

When he saw “a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff” he said he told the woman, “very politely,” that he couldn’t tow her car because she was “obviously a socialist” and advised her to “call the government” for a tow.

"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."

Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Shupe said he has drawn a line in the sand not to do business with Bernie Sanders’ supporters.

Sanders is running for president in 2016 on the Democratic ticket.

“I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views,” Shupe said Wednesday.

The woman’s mother Kelle McWade posted an angry message on Facebook after the incident, calling Shupe a bigot.

"Trump's motto is 'Make America Great Again'," McWade said. "And this kind of divisive behavior is not going to make America great again."

Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner weighed in on the situation saying,"We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don't believe any laws were broken."

Sumner said unlike race, sexuality, and religion, political affiliation is not a protected class.

"As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up," Sumner said.

One guy had his long-time gardening service refuse to do business with him anymore after he put out a Trump sign. For another guy, it was some other contractor.

I'm reacting to Euphemia's nonsense that somehow by refusing to tow some woman's car he didn't do a job he was paid to do. Everytime I've been towed the payment was calculated at the end of the tow. They have to do it that way because tows are based on the number of miles and until the tow is finished the number of miles is an estimate. So clearly he didn't refuse to do a job he was already paid to do. Now if, after towing someone all the way home and being told "I'm sure $20 on the $70 tow bill you just quoted me" he decided to say "Screw it" and go on to the next job rather than towing some junker all the way back to his shop as collaterol for the tow that's his business. Which brings up another point. Say if the car is worth less than the tow? Suppose the car is some old junker that's now been totalled in a wreck and you tow 100 miles to the owners home only to be told "Sorry. I don't have the money to pay you." Now what? You "own" a car that's not worth the tow and you have to spend more gas and time to tow it back to your place of business and to do what with it exactly?

It is true that the quality of my services is inversely related to how much people pay me. In my dealings with the public, Sanders supporters haven't been that bad to me. On the other hand I have gained a distrust for people in the towing and impounding racket. Some are good people, some can really rake someone over.
