Donald Trump attacked Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) on Monday for extending the right to vote people who have served prison sentences for felonies.

"You know what they just did in the state of Virginia? Two hundred thousand people that were in prison for horrible crimes are being given the right to vote," the GOP presidential front-runner told an audience in Rhode Island on Monday.

"That's crooked politics," Trump added. "Because Virginia's a very close state."

The billionaire predicted he would win Virginia in November because he has "a lot of employees, a tremendous amount of property" in the state. But he anticipated the newly eligible voters would support the Democratic presidential nominee, which might thwart his chances.

"They know [the criminals are] going to vote Democrat," Trump said of McAuliffe and his political machine. "And that could be the swing. That's how disgusting and dishonest our political system is."

Hillary Clinton, who is a longtime friend of McAuliffe's, has praised the Virginia governor for signing the executive order to extend voting rights to more than 200,000 people convicted of felonies.
