Current US VP/House Speaker and many other high ranking gov officials being Catholics, will this have any impact on US policy on refugees from Syria, Benghazi, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan etc?

Right kindly thing for the Pope to do. I assume they were well vetted before he did it. Should be no problem to give them refuge in the Vatican. Great to see him put his money where his mouth is.

Wow, that if confirmed would have to be one of the biggest trickery in papal history.

This thing calling itself the Bishop of Rome is a communist.

...not that I have any objection to the washing of the feet; that's quite Christian.

But what normal man would want another man to wash his feet? I wouldn't.

It's a recognized tradition for Maundy Thursday for Anglican, Catholic, and some other denominations. Orthodox are just moving into Holy Week.

The tradition is based on the account of the Last Supper in John 13. It is a demonstration of humilty, and many believe it is commanded as a practice in the church.

I do not need to fear for the papa?

"The Pope is the Bishop of Rome,
and thereby the world leader of the Catholic Church.
The word comes from the Latin papa, which means “father."

I have no objection to the Pope carrying on the tradition as it has been practiced for over 2000 years, but I object to him making it any other statement than what it is--following the example of Jesus to wash the feet of his disciples.

Likewise, but it's a (very ancient, pre-Christian) sign of hospitality.

Read the Bible.

The Church in Rome is almost synonymous with Western Civilization.

I'm not a Catholic, but if I were to join a religion, it would without question be the Roman Catholic Church.

...it makes me unspeakably sad how low it has fallen.

I can understand why the Pope would do the washing.[/B] what I cant understand is why one would want him to wash their feet. I doubt that is commanded as a practice. I don't even think I would really want my wife to wash my feet.

ya. that is a pretty major disconnect right there bro. :o

if the "papa" does it. it is OK by you. and understandable.
the wife? not so much eh? :)

Yeah, foot washing has always been a huge stance changer for US policy.

That's more than just washing and it is nastry. I can think of a hundred other ways to show humility that are not off the deep end like this. You can be humble without licking other people. The Mayan had traditions also....like sacrifices of Children....not all traditions are good.

Yes, kissing feet seems bit over the top though.

Yeah, foot washing has always been a huge stance changer for US policy.

The premise is that Pope has some influence over US Congress Speaker and the Congress Speaker has some influence over US policy bills.

That. It's a tradition. No need to insert the politics.. That's what gets to me, practicing Biblical traditions not out of Christian charity but purely for political reasons. If Francis genuinely loves these guys so much, quit making a show of kissing their feet, but instead house them in the rooms next to you in the papal palace.

It's a practice that comes from an incredibly different culture. I can't say I entirely get it either.

Pope Francis doesn't live in the Papal Palace. He lives in a modest apartment (http://www.thecatholictelegraph.com/pope-of-the-people-pope-francis-to-live-in-vatican-guesthouse-not-papal-apartments/13355). Francis walks the walk, following the teachings of Jesus. He washed the feet of Muslims because they are the most feared/hated people in the Western world; the example is not Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, but rather the sinning woman in the city of Nain, who washed and anointed Jesus' feet. (Luke 7:36-50).

Having visited that culture, I can say it's mostly about the foot being the lowest part of the body and the one doing the washing, lowering himself enough to do the washing.

I remember when we were told to never point our foot at somebody as it would be taken as an insult. The head on the other hand is the highest part of the body and thus we were told to never pat some kid on the head as it could also be taken as an insult.

OK he can invite the Muslims to live with him in his modest apartment instead of symbolically kissing their feet and trying to convince Europe to turn their neighborhoods into ghettoes that he never has to enter.

Pope Francis has already taken in refugees (http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2015/09/06/pope-opens-the-vatican-to-refugees-calls-on-europes-churches-to-follow-suit/), and has asked that every church, monastery, and shrine in Europe do the same.

I really wouldn't expect the Pope to act any other way, being a man of the faith. It's up to the Europeans to decide whether or not to follow his lead though. Me, I would think that providing the refugees with assistance in establishing some infrastructure in the desert areas of their homelands would be more appropriate than trying to assimilate them into a culture that is so contrary to theirs.

That is nice that he temporarily took in two families into the Vatican, but I think it would be better to stop bombing* the heck out of the Muslims in their homeland rather than permanently changing the demographics of Europe.

*Granted the Pope has been against the atrocities happening in the Middle east. I will give him that.

Of course he took them in temporarily. The idea is that they will eventually matriculate, finding their own homes, their own lives. But that will take some time, as these people adjust to life in Europe.

Pope Francis has been an outspoken critic of the wars in the Middle East, and has also condemned the military industrial complex (http://usuncut.com/news/pope-francis-condemns-weapons-industry/).
