Haupt’s Take: Let the people do it if Congress won’t By William Haupt III (http://watchdog.org/author/williamhauptiii/) / March 21, 2016 / No Comments (http://watchdog.org/260083/let-the-people-do-it/#disqus_thread)

By William Haupt III | Haupt’s Take

“I follow a set of principles,
I follow the Constitution.
And that’s what I base my votes on:
Limited government, economic freedom and individual liberty.”
(Justin Amash)

American politicians act like an unfaithful lover who promises you more than they are planning on giving. You wait each day for them to deliver, and somehow they only throw you a bone to appease you. Politicians, like that unfaithful lover, once they get what they want which is your vote, never fulfill promises made to woo you. If they toss you a bone, there is not enough meat on it to feed a Chihuahua.

This should be an admonition for all of us! The president’s supporters in Congress passed everything to pamper his base. The only redemption is many of them will never vote again since they got all they wanted. He sold this gullible group on Cap and Trade as a way to punish the rich and recycle the wealth. He convinced his naïve congregation and others, he would provide them “free” healthcare, housing, gas and food. He disobeyed the hypocritical rule of democratic governing:

“America is not anything if it consists of each of us. It is something only if it consists of all of us.” (Woodrow Wilson)

Are the people in this building doing their jobs?

Americans who believe in free-market constitutional government are highly frustrated with the way the federal bureaucracy has been abusing their rights and liberties these past eight years! And a majority of them back a number of critical political reform ideas. According to a recent report from The Federal Reform Forum, over three quarters of our citizens favor a national referendum on key issues.

This clearly indicates that many limited-government-Americans are tired of Congress and the President inflicting too many expensive, unconstitutional, unwanted, un-financed, unnecessary, mandates upon us. Our country now looks more like a neo-socialist Soviet dominion than a free republic. This is totally antithetical to the core principles that brought our first settlers to Plymouth that laid the groundwork for our governing documents and constitution.

“America is God’s Crucible, the great Melting-Pot where all the races of Europe were melting and re-forming!” (Israel Zangwill)

Shortly after our founding, when Jefferson and Hamilton split the government into two very distinct factions, the Federalists and anti-federalists, Americans have supported very specific reforms to our political system. They wanted a return of influence to the average citizen and a decrease in the clout of elected representatives and special interest groups. As George Washington had predicted; “Once our country is divided by political parties, the voice of the people will never again be heard.”

Today, the people want their voice back. If we look at the laws that have been recently passed, by Congress and by executive order of President Obama, we have a broken system. When the Court declares everything constitutional that’s not, it’s easy to see why we have lost faith in government. Today there are increasing exigencies for a direct vote on all legislation that ultimately encroaches on our rights, liberties, and free-markets! Voters are demanding a national referendum.
“Promises made by today’s politicians, are the same promises others have made every election.” (John Ward)

Currently, Americans feel they have no way of directly governing their own nation. This has come to fruition as a result of our national government passing so many laws they do don’t want; failing to pass laws they want; and has dramatically failing to alter our system of government to prevent continual abuses of power and our constitution. The evolution of our republic has turned into elitist sovereign rule. Whoever is sovereign has unbounded power to decide our fate.

By exercising our rights to express ourselves collectively, as “we the people, we are reclaiming that sovereignty. And our most foundational right is the right to establish a process to exercise our own sovereignty as Americans to control our government, and govern ourselves when they refuse to do it for us. This is done in many nations and many of states by referendum. The referendum procedure is currently in place in over half of our states. This allows voters to directly pass or reject key laws rather than having elected representatives in the legislature decide all issues for them.

“America is the place where you cannot kill your government by killing the men who conduct it.” (Woodrow Wilson)

There are over 235 million voters in America. Many share the view our current government is no longer controlled by us but by influential special interest groups and plutocrats. Our establishment politicians are so entrenched in this, it is impossible for them to challenge this on their own.

As a result, the laws most people want are not passed and the ones they don’t want are. A national referendum process would give the American people the power to pass laws Congress won’t pass and overturn laws Congress passed which a majority doesn’t like. Yes this would be an impractical solution for formulating the daily rule of law.

But giving the voters the right to overturn unpopular policies like Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, Common Core, and EPA overreach would be a blessing for all in our republic. And a referendum would make the people’s will very clear:

“America’s present need is not heroics but healing; not nostrums but normalcy; not revolution but restoration.” (Warren Harding)

The central power of a democratic government is lawmaking. Those who make the laws determine how, when, and what voters can vote on. Historically many rulers have been oppressive and the people were forced to endure the wrath of their onerous law making. As we experience more of this in the US, it is time to take action. If we wish to regain control we must first elect better law makers then become lawmakers ourselves. Our coveted check and balance system is no longer working.

We need a new entity to protect liberty. The press used to be considered the Fourth Estate, the branch of government to keep politicians honest. But they sold out to the elitists. We must now assume that role as the Fourth branch of government. If the politicians know we will do what they will not do, or undo what they have done, we will see a succinctly trenchant change in government.

“American dreams are strongest in the hearts of those who have seen America only in their dreams.” (P. Lyer)

Many claim the people are not qualified to pass laws to govern their lives. And these are the same politicians who think we are qualified to relinquish our power to make laws to them on Election Day. And as soon as we have surrendered this power to those who manipulated the electoral process, they prove they’re not worthy of governing. Conventional wisdom proves it’s easier to decide one’s self-interest directly than predict what a representative will do. They will put their own interests first.

Congress is not likely to dilute its power by empowering the people as lawmakers. It is up to us to pursue it. We must remind Congress that founder James Madison said: “Let the people do it if we can’t.” With today’s technology we have the ability to educate all American citizens. If they want to be empowered as lawmakers, they must demand this from their candidates’ next election: And once they’re elected,

“We must hold their feet to the fire until they can no longer stand it.” (T. Moss)

The people would be best served by restoring what the founders created. They had a unique way of bringing power to the people: Independent States working in union.
The only flaw in their adept, sublime logic was their inability to predict the role that politics would play in governing.
“Courage is knowing what not to fear.” (Plato)

If we had governed according to strict Constitutional law, we would not need a National Referendum. But if our politicians continue governing with no regard for the Constitution, we must to do it ourselves.

A referendum is needed to preserve our republic.

“Americans are willing to go to enormous trouble and expense defending their liberties with arms, but they show little inclination advocating for them with Congress and the President.” (Brook White)
