Trump "cozying up to the establishment"

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, said Donald J. Trump called him Tuesday morning, a conversation during which Mr. McConnell said he suggested Mr. Trump “condemn” the violence that had occurred at some of his rallies.

“I took the opportunity to recommend to him that no matter who may be triggering these violent expressions or conflicts that we’ve seen in some of these rallies, it might be a good idea to condemn that and discourage it, no matter what the source of it is,” the senator said at a news conference afterward.

Mr. McConnell did not specify why Mr. Trump had called him, nor what more was discussed.

“I assume it was just sort of to reach out, and we had a good conversation,” he said.

He would not comment on how Mr. Trump had responded to his suggestion that he speak out against the recent episodes of violence that had broken out between protesters and his supporters.

“I’m only going to quote myself,” Mr. McConnell said.
