President Obama said Friday that smartphones -- like the iPhone the FBI is trying to force Apple to help it hack -- can't be allowed to be "black boxes," inaccessible to the government. He believes technology companies should work with the government on encryption rather than leaving the issue for Congress to decide. He went on to say, "If your argument is strong encryption no matter what, and we can and should create black boxes, that I think does not strike the kind of balance we have lived with for 200, 300 years, and it's fetishizing our phones above every other value." Obama's appearance on Friday at the event known as SXSW, the first by a sitting president, comes as the FBI tries to force Apple to help investigators access an iPhone used by one of the assailants in December's deadly San Bernardino, California, terror attack. "The question we now have to ask is, if technologically it is possible to make an impenetrable device or system, where the encryption is so strong there's no key, there's no door at all, then how do we apprehend the child pornographer? How do we solve or disrupt a terrorist plot?" Obama said. "If in fact you can't crack that at all, government can't get in, then everybody's walking around with a Swiss bank account in their pocket." He said compromise is possible and the technology industry must help design it.

So Obama is for tapping human brains, because if he could read and track peoples brains, then he could stop them from doing those terrible things.

Just make encryption illegal, problem solved

So many different things we could say about this...

Just make freedom illegal?

When encryption is outlawed, only outlaws will have encryption? (and variants)
When freedom is outlawed, only outlaws will have freedom?

---

Encryption is not a crime. It never has been, and never will be. Encryption is no more of a crime than two people talking in private who do not record what they say to each other. If the government gets its way, should it ever be allowed to prohibit encryption, the next step would be to demand that people are not allowed to communicate at all without surveillance for the simple manner of speaking is in and of itself a form of obfuscation of information which would be deemed a crime against a government.

We are now all of us treated as criminals, guilty until proven innocent by a government free of the restraints and restrictions of the Constitution. They now only operate to support their own needs and futures at the expense of all others. In order to have complete and total control of an entire society, a series of rulers must have complete and total control of the surveillance of all of its subjects so that when the idea finally arises that we do not need the leaders as much as they need the blood in our chests and the sweat on our backs, those people will turn against the parasitic rulers who condemn the futures of all for the temporary and fleeting sake of a few.

Their continued and focused efforts to eliminate privacy in all of its forms is a symptom that our society has begun to waste, exhaust, and murder itself. Had the balance of power between the government and the governed been properly maintained, the governed would have continued to provide their consent.

- ICE BERG! DEAD AHEAD! Captain, what should we do?
- We must stay the course!

And we all know how that turned out.

How about if we buy them from Europe or Asia?

How about if we buy them from Europe or Asia?

That's actually a really good idea, as I don't think they have discovered encryption yet. It's illegal to export encryption technology outside of the US, so it'll probably be quite some time before Europe or Asia discover how to encrypt things on their own.

Tech isnt the problem. Its the general attitude our govt has towards respecting its people. Right now, its quite obvious they have none and plan to give us even less in the future.

Yeah, Obama said that, but didnt the Trumpmonster also say he would force Apple to decrypt the phone too? Im sure Hittlary would have said the same thing as well. It doesnt seem to matter who says what, the narrative is always the same.

Anyone know what Judge Andrew Napolitano has to say on this matter?

Yes, actually. Do a search on this forum. The article was on FoxNews. He is against forcing Apple to decrypt the phone and for good reason.

Obama administration moves to formalize annihilation of the 4th Amendment
http://personalliberty.com/obama-administration-moves-to-formalize-annihilation-of-the-4th-amendment/

It’s no secret that communications data gathered by the National Security Agency has, contrary to government assurances, been used by domestic law enforcement agencies. And now, government spies and their lawyers are working to finalize a new set of rules that will give an official stamp of approval to this abuse of Americans’ 4th Amendment rights.

In fall 2014, the Electronic Frontier Foundation noted that some Patriot Act spy provisions put into place to catch terrorists were actually being used overwhelmingly by domestic law enforcement agencies. At the heart of the controversy were so-called “sneak-and-peek” powers which allowed federal law enforcement officials to quietly access information that would usually require a warrant.

EFF reported at the time:

Out of the 3,970 total requests from October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010, 3,034 were for narcotics cases and only 37 for terrorism cases (about .9%). Since then, the numbers get worse. The 2011 report reveals a total of 6,775 requests. 5,093 were used for drugs, while only 31 (or .5%) were used for terrorism cases. The 2012 report follows a similar pattern: Only .6%, or 58 requests, dealt with terrorism cases. The 2013 report confirms the incredibly low numbers. Out of 11,129 reports only 51, or .5%, of requests were used for terrorism. The majority of requests were overwhelmingly for narcotics cases, which tapped out at 9,401 requests.

...

The spying of the US govt is done on behalf of the Money Powers and done to the American People. Most of us have said in some form that the spying on everyone has NOTHING to do with stopping terrorism.

Cryptography has existed literally since written language. Could government compel an individual to decrypt their own recorded works as well? One of the earliest known forms of cryptography:

Some clay tablets from Mesopotamia somewhat later are clearly meant to protect information—one dated near 1500 BCE was found to encrypt a craftsman's recipe for pottery glaze, presumably commercially valuable.

Also ciphers, such as Caesar cipher, have existed in ancient Greece since 500 BCE.

President Obama said Friday that smartphones can't be allowed to be "black boxes," inaccessible to the government.

And Americans said for the last several decades that national security cannot be allowed to be "black boxes," inaccessible to the citizenry.
