Hey everyone, I was wondering if you could link me a good article or scholarly paper on worker visas. I have a individual whom I've spoken to, I am obviously against them, and she believes everything that she has ever read in a newspaper. I'm hoping you guys have a mises article or something. I tried your standard duckduckgo search, and nothing compelling came up. Thanks!

When you say you're against them, you mean that people should be able to come to the USA from anywhere in the world and get a job without needing any visa or any other paperwork. Right?

Is so, then you're right, and it should be easy enough to argue for that just by simple moral principles.

Well yea, but she has a degree in Economics (Keynesian) and she is hyper focused on the economic side of it, not the moral side of it.

My case has been basically: The Visas allow for a government created monopoly on labor in which the American Worker cannot compete. It leads to low wages, poor working conditions, and inefficiency within the specific market.

However, if the free market was allowed to work, the wages would go up, as the companies would have to compete for US Labor, and as wages go up, prices would naturally have to go down or stay the same, in order to compete with the otherwise stable international market. It would force efficiency and innovation in order to keep prices low, and encourage higher wages and better working conditions in order to compete for workers.

At the end of the day, you may get a bunch of high school kids out in the fields for 10 dollars an hour (which is a good thing) or it might lead to an innovation where a new machine can decrease the need for labor (which is also a good thing)

On top of that, I made the case for rational immigration reform while not opening borders. A 1800s type approach to immigration. Where we are selective, safe, and prosperous.

"The invisible hand cannot work if it is handcuffed to government protection of failure".

So wait, you're arguing that these foreign workers shouldn't be allowed to come here and work for lower wages than American workers?

Under government mandate, yes. See, the government grants the contracts, which undercuts the economy. By eliminating the visas, you take away the government granted monopoly of labor. I'm all for foreign workers coming here to work for lower wages...for work permits to come here to work freely in an open market, but I'm not for the the government monopoly, no.

You're saying that the government mandates that companies hire people with H1B visas? It's not those companies' choice to do that?

Where does this government monopoly that you're talking about come in?

No, you misunderstand my point. The government doesn't mandate (as in socialism) it facilitates (as in fascism). It allows a separate class of workers in the market, who are completely willing to work for extremely poor wages in extremely poor conditions. This class of worker are essentially the paid property of the company for the term of the contract, as they are kicked from their country if they are fired or quit. It is different from an individual seeking employment, willing to work for poor wages and poor conditions (which is completely fine)....this is government packaging this group and providing them to companies, who then do not have to worry about competing for American workers, as they have a steady source of gov. protected cheap labor.

It is blanketly exploiting foreigners, at the expense of the American worker, for the profit of companies, through the unconstitutional power of the federal gov.

By re-forcing competition on these companies (and as I said, we obviously should be letting people in to work and compete in a free market), all of the benefits of free enterprise returns

Higher wages
Higher productivity
More efficiency
Lower Prices
More Innovation
ect

The companies and the government does not want to do that because...simply, it threatens their monopolies and their source of cheap labor....it allows small businesses to compete with them (and since bureaucracy sucks....probably bury them)

H1-B Visas are a barrier to trade...it has nothing to do with free trade.
