Healthcare and government have overtaken the retail sector as most-targeted for data breaches, according to security firm Gemalto.

A total of 1,673 data breaches led to 707 million data records being compromised worldwide during 2015, according to the latest edition of Gemalto’s Breach Level Index report.

Not all breaches are equally serious and the number of records disclosed is only one metric. Gemalto’s study attempts to recognise this by assigning a severity score to each breach based on factors including the type of data and the number of records compromised, the source of the breach, and whether or not the data was encrypted. The methodology aims to distinguish nuisances from high impact mega breaches.

More than 3.6 billion data records have been exposed since 2013, when Gemalto began benchmarking publicly disclosed data breaches. In 2015, malicious outsiders (ie, hackers) were the leading source of these breaches, accounting for 964, or 58 per cent of breaches and 38 per cent of compromised records. Accidental loss or exposure of data records accounted for 36 per cent of all records.

The number of state-sponsored attacks accounted for two per cent of data breach incidents, but the number of records compromised as a result of those attacks made up 15 per cent of all records exposed.

The disproportionate impact of a small number of breaches is partly explained by the high impact breach at the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which exposed the personal details of multiple government employees and leaked all manner of sensitive information from background checks and related documents. Malicious insiders accounted for 14 per cent of all data breaches and just seven per cent of compromised records.

In terms of geographic regions, 59 per cent of all reported breach incidents happened in the United States. Europe accounted for 12 per cent of overall breach incidents, followed by the Asia Pacific region at eight per cent.

This is called an Attack Vector. Largest exposed surface. What this means is that governments used to have less info on you than they do now. Duh. In years of old, a govt used to have your name, address, SSN (if you had one), and maybe tax stuff. Sure, they'd also have legal info on you, such as court rulings, maybe licenses or permits, but mostly pretty boring stuff as lots of that data was made available to the public anyway as a function of govt, and as a necessity of its funcionality. Do you have a permit to build here? Theyre gonna make that data public as a function of govt. And yes, the first thing to pop into my mind is the Communist Manifesto line about converting Rights to Privileges. The thing is, that info used to not be so terribly useful or interesting. But things have changed. Govts now have much more data on individuals that can be used against an individual for things like blackmail. And their goal is nearly every detail of a persons personal life. Absolute treasure trove because it is a means by which an actual non govt employee hacker can find a suitable target, then go after them, which, as usual, compromises their security.

Privacy is security, not the other way around. If governments had less data on an individual, there would be less of an Attack Vector. Now that they have the exceptional level of details, they have made themselves the target. And guess what, the people that work at the NSA as individuals are people too, and they can also make mistakes, just like everyone else, despite their compromised and questionable morality exchanging their personal financial security for your privacy. Larger political moves, there are no mistakes. If our highest politicians were really human, they would make minor mistakes here and there. Im also talking about mistakes made at the highest levels, war level stuff. Oh geez, WMD's. Forgot about that. No I didnt. Invasion of Iraq was the plan all along and WMDs was used as an excuse, so their "mistake" was part of the plan. Social Engineering. Yes, very off topic, but if you were a hacker, say for the Chinese government, who would be of more interest to you? Joe Blow the plummer, or the mid level NSA employee? Think Attack Vector. How would you break into the NSA? Do it all remotely as a form of Cyber Warfare? Or maybe discover who works for who, then target the individual and see if they had any social cues that could be used to compromise NSA security? I am not trying to advocate any form of violence against the NSA or any other govt agency, but identify how an enemy of the United States would think and where they would strike.

But how does any of that affect you? Different groups will have different purposes and different goals. When your personal privacy is compromised, I think it can be classified by three distinct types of interested groups.

#1 - Govt: Total Control of an individual
#2 - Corporations: Looking for excuses to charge you more money.
#3 - Hackers: Goals vary widely but include everything from Revenge, Mayhem, and Greed.

The current attitude toward privacy has created an incredible demand for the details of what you do in your personal life. You are very interesting to at least two of the three groups. Now, think about Supply and Demand, as well as the goals for each type of group and how your data could be used against you. Ever cheated on your partner? Blackmail. That is of use to Hackers. Three things got listed with Hackers, typically small groups with no interest in political affiliation will be intested in Revenge against you for various reasons. Perhaps you are a Christian. Just being a Christian does not make you safe from the scrutiny of those who feel that they have been harmed in some way by Christianity. Yeah Im looking at radical extremists, as our govt does love to point their fingers at them as their excuse to harvest your data. Some men just wanna see the world bleed. Those are your typical assholes that spraypaint graffiti on the sides of buildings and what not. And there is greed. If you have any money what so ever, you can be a target, and just being an American pretty much makes you a target. If you file taxes, they can falsify information and get your tax refund. Also Identity Theft. As always, the more information about you that is out there, the more of an Attack Vector the stores of this type of data is of value to the lone wolf hacker. There are more than just those types of hackers as well. Such as politically motivated ones.

Then you have Corporations. Make no mistake, the purpose of a Corporation is to make money. So when you see a Progressive advertisement for those devices you can plug in to your car that is intended to "save you money", the real goal is NOT for them to lose money, but to give you a rope by which to hang yourself with. By finding every driving mistake you make, they now have a legitimate and legal excuse to increase your rates and charge you more money. Should you be involved in an accident, the information they have from you will be used to deny payment of insurance claims. Other applications include targetted advertising, but while not technically either illegal or immoral from certain perspectives, the goal here is the same. They tell you what to think and what to buy. Targetted advertising being the least offensive, it is the face that most corporations display and try to shift focus toward. Corporations work hand in hand with governments, so they have much less visible goals as well. Corporations will fight any challenges to their financial power over you as well. This is why PayPal has the so called authority to dictate that you can not use their services to purchase a firearm, while Credit Card Companies work with Facebook so they can maximize their profit margins by jacking up your interest rates as high as possible while maintaining the illusion of offering a good deal, which is why your credit score gets dinged when ever you say the word "wasted" on Fedbook. I kid you not, that is real, go look it up.

Then you have Governments. I like to call most governments the Department of Violence. They are the ones that use various types of force to prevent any challenge to the status quo. Their real motives have nothing to do with stopping terrorists, but instead, stopping you from having freedom. Freedom of the people is perhaps the greatest threat to all forms of human control because it invalidates the necessity of the existince of the ruling parasitic class. Thus, the true goal of governments, who work hand in hand with corporations, to crush any form of dissent before it can gain any momentum. As always, every excuse, not legitimate reasons, will be used to deprive you of your many Rights so you are left dependent and controllable by the rulers. Privacy is one of those truly essential human Rights, by which, if they have no data on you, you are not controllable. Other Rights are also at risk, such as the First Amendment: Freedom of Speech, where by you can speak out publicly against the actions of either governments or corporations, which truly is the first stage of all revolutions. The second stage of revolution is public disobedience. Laws will be passed by a parasitic ruling class with the intent of crushing any form of public disobedience, and those decisions are most efficiently applied when they know who specifically is participating in civil disobedience. IE, dont pay your taxes or bills. Again, protected by the documents of our Founding Fathers, and fuck you San Diego, I dont really care if using the word Father is offensive in way of gender bias to groups of butt hurt crybullies. The last stage of revolution is violence, which is why we have a 2nd Amendment. The elimination of Privacy as one of many Human Rights is essential to Liberty and Freedom because it allows for a Revolution to take place when the scope and scale of governments and corporations exceed the natural balance that needs to exist for any healthy society to survive. Revolution is the self defense mechanism of the people against rulers, and privacy is a major part of that, for without privacy, when all actions are subject to approval, no form of meaningful revolution can be had. Since the ruling parasitic class has done everything in their power to prevent the first two forms of revolution, where by a peaceful and meaningful change can take place, they are leaving no other option other than violence, and that needs to be avoided at all costs, and what is most likely coming because they have made it so. The powers that be have sacrificed the future of humanity for a present of lavish lifestyles and living beyond their own means at your expense. For their wealth to continue to exist, you must have every ability to resist their actions taken away. That is the real cost of the elimination of Privacy and Human Rights, a future where you are enslaved on every level of existence.
