Illegal immigrants and individuals with unclear legal status wrongly benefited from up to $750 million in ObamaCare subsidies and the government is struggling to recoup the money, according to a new Senate report obtained by Fox News.

The report, produced by Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, examined Affordable Care Act tax credits meant to defray the cost of insurance premiums. It found that as of June 2015, “the Administration awarded approximately $750 million in tax credits on behalf of individuals who were later determined to be ineligible because they failed to verify their citizenship, status as a national, or legal presence.”

The review found the credits went to more than 500,000 people – who are illegal immigrants or whose legal status was unclear due to insufficient records.
...
The Senate report also accused the administration of lacking a solid plan to get that money back – and predicted that in the end, the IRS will be “unable to fully recoup the funds.”

“The information provided to the Committee by the IRS and HHS reveals a troubling lack of coordination between the two agencies ... and demonstrates that the IRS and HHS neglected to consider how they would recover these wasteful payments,” the report says.
...
The Senate report, based on a review launched by committee Chairman Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., derisively describes this approach as “pay and chase.”

In other words, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services pays credits and subsidies to the insurance companies on behalf of the applicants – and the feds then “chase” after any overpayments to ineligible people once they are discovered.

“This ‘pay and chase’ model has potentially cost taxpayers approximately $750 million,” the report says. The 500,000 individuals in question have been removed from coverage, according to the findings, as the government seeks to get the money back.
...
In a July letter to Johnson, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen assured that the agency is “committed to identifying and efficiently addressing” improper payments. He reiterated that anyone “not lawfully present” who enrolls for ObamaCare coverage “must repay” the advance premium credit payments, and would be breaking the law if they don’t.

Illegal immigration + ObamaCare = A whole new class of criminal that requires more government to "chase". Have to fix that "troubling lack of coordination" and that will take more money. Good thing that Obama and friends have stopped INS and ICE from chasing the new arrivals. Much better to have the IRS hunt them down.

There's no way that $750 million figure is accurate. When all is said and done $75 billion will be closer to the correct figure.

$75 million would literally be like $3 each or less.

Official: $750Mn / 11Mn = $68.18
Generous: $750Mn / 20Mn = $37.50

That's assuming that every single illegal immigrant in the US is on Obamacare. I do not believe such an assumption is valid or warranted. I'd be surprised if 10% of all illegal immigrants are signed up for O'care, which makes it $682 at the official estimate or $375 at the generous estimate.

Not necessarily all were illegal immigrants.

or whose legal status was unclear due to insufficient records.

According to The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services spokesman, Aaron Albright, “lack of verification does not mean an individual is ineligible for financial assistance, but only that a Marketplace did not receive sufficient information to verify eligibility in the time period outlined in the law.”

The federal government still grants the subsidies on a “temporary basis” to those who cannot verify their citizenship in the time period allowed. Their credits are still paid in advance to the insurers. If the recipient is still unable to verify their immigration status, then funding and coverage is suspended and the IRS is supposed to receive overpayments back from the individuals that were wrongly covered.

500,000 suspected cases out of $750 million means about $1500 each.

The smart ones didn't sign up. They aren't stupid enough to jump on the happy, stupid, government is great, wise and benevolent band-wagon.

Probably a lot of activists on the list though. So-called "dreamers" and people who have been here a long time, and know nothing other than PC, progressive, no-one-accountable, everyone-entitled America. The people that just got here are far more worldly than that.

Well fuck. We have to get rid of the illegals so we can save Obamacare.

Paying for the world's downtrodden parasites as well as our own will soon be enshrined in the Constitution at this rate! Let's just get this painful exercise over with.
28th amendment - Any terrestrial based member of this planet is entitled to certain basic necessities which will be provided by citizens of the United States. The funny thing is that the courts basically ruled the above because judicial tyranny is so chic these days.
