View Full Version : Why Hollywood's diversity issues go deeper than Oscars 'whiteout'

This was supposed to be not so with current historic POTUS' non-racial leadership or does Trump mania contributed to this 'whiteout' scandal?

Why Hollywood's diversity issues go deeper than Oscars 'whiteout' (+video)

Paths to progress? For the second year in a row, the Academy nominated only white actors in all the acting categories. But experts say the diversity problem reaches far beyond awards shows.

January 15, 2016
Phil McCarten/Reuters
This year’s all-white acting Oscar nominations have once more provoked an outcry over the lack of recognition given to people of color in Hollywood – a view that echoes controversy from the previous awards season. (See #OscarsSoWhite.)
In 2015, pundits set their sights on the Academy itself, a club “older and more dude-heavy than just about any place in America,” as The Atlantic’s Derek Thompson put it.
But while the voting body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues to draw criticism for its “great male whiteness,” experts and advocates are now also underscoring a more fundamental lack of diversity in the structure of film and television – even as they acknowledge the headway the industry has made over the past decade.

Um, Stallone got the nomination for best supporting actor, so he isn't even taking anything away from Michael B. Jordan by being nominated, since if he was nominated it would have been for best actor, if anything.

And if any black actor was going to get nominated for best actor this year, it wouldn't have been Michael B. Jordan anyway, it would have been Will Smith who is >>>>>>> Michael B. Jordan in general, and whose performance in Concussion was also >>>>>>>> Michael B. Jordan's in Creed.

In the category of boxing movies from 2015, while Creed wasn't a bad movie, and Stallone was surprisingly pretty good in that role--certainly much better than I expected, anyway--I actually thought Southpaw was much, much better overall.

I haven't seen Straight Outta Compton, so can't really comment on that.

In the category of legitimate snubs, Ex Machina got snubbed hard as far as I'm concerned.

I'm confused. Isn't best actor/actress/any nomination about the "best" in that category? Why does race enter into it at all? Isn't that racist?

For that matter shouldn't voting be for the best candidate? Is it more important to have the first black/woman/Asian whatever candidate than the best candidate win? Racist again...

The whole gender thing is much bigger than race. Women in film are demanding that there is at least 5+ females featured in every film, blah, blah, blah. It's hard to get a script accepted nowadays if it doesn't feature the 'appropriate' amount of women.

I'm surprised "Fury" ever got made in today's cinematic world.

In actuality, what is neglected in Hollywood is Comedy. The last real comedy feature to win an Oscar for best picture was Frank Capra's "It Happened One Night" in 1934.

I'm glad women and people of color are making demands of the industry. It is largely controlled by liberals and has had no outside competition in forever. It is liberal establishement at its worst. Maybe now people will start looking outside Hollywood for ways to bring better media to the market.

Imagine if John Carpenter tried to remake The Thing today. All male cast, great movie, but there would be demands for a female presence just because they're females.

Oh wait, they already did a "premake" of The Thing and it featured women and sucked. The gender and race of a cast do not matter unless it's a historically based movie. It's all about dialogue, story, sets, camera work, sound design, acting ability, and effects when it comes to making a movie come together. Not an arbitrary number of physical traits across the cast.

Diversity is complained about regardless. The people that want to be offended will shove aside all sorts of interesting people from absolutely diverse backgrounds in their hope that no one cares they've reclassified them as "white."

These same people that are whining MIGHT have seen "Mad Max: Fury Road" as an interesting choice, since when it came out all anyone was talking about was how feminist it was while still being a good movie. Where's THAT group? Where's the group applauding Alejandro González Iñárritu, who is Mexican, yet for the purpose of these whiners is part of the "Whiteout"? He's won several times, btw. Brooklyn is about the immigrant experience, but I guess it's too "whitewashed" for people who ignorantly pass by the difficulties of Italian and Irish immigrants less than 100 years ago.

Mind you, the Oscars are like a graduation ceremony for the neighbor's kid; I don't care, I'm not going to watch, but I'll nod politely afterward in acknowledgement that it happened.

Sony Hack Reveals Hollywood's Acceptance Of White Privilege

Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman.

It is, perhaps, the worst nightmare for those of us constantly trying to get a white-dominated Hollywood to widen its doors of opportunity for people of color: All those executives who say the right things in public and give to the right causes, just might think something much less admirable about diversity behind closed doors.
This seems the surface lesson of the emails unearthed by hackers into Sony's computer records. I haven't seen the stolen emails or any of the other data hacked from Sony's computers. My thoughts are based on what I've read and heard about emails whose content Sony has not disputed.
And many of those reports detail racially insensitive — OK, Shonda Rhimes, you're right (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/shonda-rhimes-call-sony-email-756701): let's just call them racist — jokes between studio executive Amy Pascal and movie producer Scott Rudin. Their reported emails read like they were cribbed from an old Larry Sanders Show episode, with the pair sounding like caricatures of clueless, racially oblivious fat cats.
Small wonder Pascal reached out to the media's highest-profile advocates on issues involving racism, the Rev. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, "to discuss a healing process," as she told The Hollywood Reporter.
http://media.npr.org/assets/img/2014/12/18/ap4603419843-0beeb7d22029ed8e1785e01e6385c2cabb86dc34-s300-c85.jpg i (http://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2014/12/26/371716376/hollywoods-acceptance-of-white-privilege-revealed-by-sony-hack#)
The Rev. Al Sharpton (left) and Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, speak to reporters after they met with Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal on Dec. 18.

After meeting with Pascal, Sharpton said, "The climate and environment of Hollywood only confirms the type of language that was used in those emails." At a post-meeting news conference, a coalition of civil rights groups pledged to work with her and Sony. Sharpton also tweeted that the emails "show a cultural blindness," though he didn't call for Pascal to step down.
What these emails really reveal is how little Hollywood is willing to challenge the basic structures, practices and thinking that make it such a white-dominated industry. This seems to happen even when there's evidence that breaking down those walls will actually make better films and more money.
Consider the Golden Globe award nominees. Last year, thanks to films like 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, Captain Phillips and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, there were a wealth of nonwhite actors, actresses, directors and screenwriters nominated for top awards in film.
This year, there are eight nonwhite Golden Globe nominees in major acting and directing categories across TV and movies. Films prominently featuring black people, like Belle, Beyond the Lights, Top 5 and Dear White People, were overlooked; Selma, the feature film on Martin Luther King Jr., got two of the three nominations for nonwhite people in film.

Based on this CNW/LA Times findings, Oscar voters majority can be both White and Jewish simultaneously:

Oscar Voters Lack Diversity

Contact: Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights

NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2016 /Christian Newswire/ -- Bill Donohue comments on the profile of Oscar voters:

Al Sharpton is angry that for two years in a row, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not nominate any black actors. "Hollywood is like the Rocky Mountains," he said, "the higher up you get the whiter it gets." He added that Hollywood has a "fraudulent image of progressive and liberal politics and policies."
Is Sharpton right? We know from a Los Angeles Times poll that Oscar voters are 94 percent white. We also know that they are 76 percent male and that their average age is 63. They are also heavily Jewish. Writing in the Jewish Journal, Abe Fried-Tanzer says, "It is no secret that there are Jews all over Hollywood." Indeed, the Jewish Forward says it is merely a "sociological observation" to note that "Jews run Hollywood."

Is there a problem that Oscar voters are mostly older Jewish guys? Yes, but not because they are older, or white, or Jewish: it's because their values, which are decidedly liberal-left, are not representative of the American public. As such, traditional-minded persons are severely underrepresented in the voting process.

What happened to Marlon Brando was a shame. It shouldn’t, mustn’t happen to Seth MacFarlane.

On the other hand, objecting to the myth that Jews control Hollywood raises serious questions of definition. If anybody can genuinely be said to control Tinseltown, it’s probably the 25 people who run the 12 main film studios—that is, the chairman (in one case, two co-chairmen) and president of each. Of those 25, 21 are Jewish, or 84%.

ust so the Jews. It’s fair to say “the Jews” play a big role in getting foreign aid through Congress—lobbyists are acting in our name with our charity dollars. That’s a fact of politics. By contrast, Jews run Hollywood, but the Jews don’t. It’s a sociological observation, but not a political one. There’s no “secret synagogue” (Seth MacFarlane as “Ted,” satirically quoting “The Protocols”) that meets in New York or Brentwood to decide what films to shove down the gentiles’ throats. That’s a myth, and it’s a persistent, pernicious one. It’s part of a malign delusion that Jews conspire to rule the world. Unfortunately, a great many people believe it.

Example: In April 1996, Marlon Brando appeared on “Larry King Live” and talked about overly negative portrayals of blacks in Hollywood movies. “Hollywood is run by Jews,” he said. “It is owned by Jews, and they should have a greater sensitivity about the issue of—of people who are suffering. Because they’ve exploited.” In response, his world exploded and he found himself apologizing in tears the next day, saying he didn’t know what had come over him.

Right around the time of Brando’s gaffe, Seagrams Corp. was taking control of Universal Pictures, and the biggest betting game around was whether Universal chairman Lew Wasserman and president Sid Sheinberg would be toppled. In the middle of it, the New York Times ran a box on its front business page showing the top 20 executives at the top 10 studios. 19 were Jewish.
There are dangerous, evil myths told about Jews, but there are also uncomfortable truths. It’s time we learned how to tell the difference, and to defend ourselves honorably from the one while learning from the other. What happened to Marlon Brando was a shame. It shouldn’t, mustn’t happen to Seth MacFarlane.

Hollywood studios blacklist Cruz and Bardem over Gaza letter

http://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/8d76dedc64b20612a9c12115da62fba1?width=650Married Spanish actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

THE Oscar-winning actors Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz have fuelled furious divisions within Hollywood over the Gaza conflict by accusing Israel of committing “genocide” in the territory.
Pledges to shun the Spanish actors believed to have been made privately by a handful of top industry executives came after Bardem and Cruz, who are married, signed an open letter denouncing “the genocide perpetrated by the Israeli occupation army”.
The letter accused Israel of stoking the conflict by “advancing on Palestinian territories instead of withdrawing to the 1967 borders”. It added: “Gaza is living through horror ... while the international community does nothing.”

Ryan Kavanaugh, the chief executive of Relativity Media, whose recent films include The Family, starring Robert De Niro, told The Hollywood Reporter: “As the grandson of Holocaust survivors, I know that anyone calling what’s going on in Israel ‘genocide’ [instead of] self-defence is either ignorant and shouldn’t be commenting or is truly anti-semitic.”
Those sentiments were echoed privately by several industry figures, who said actors who persisted in openly criticising Israel would struggle to find work.

However, many actors said that the threats to boycott Bardem and Cruz were being made at a time when passions were running high and that the actors would soon find employment again as long as they continued to draw audiences.
Mostly, however, Hollywood has been silent about Gaza. One writer said that he had been struck by the failure of the actor Sean Penn to comment.

The Academy Awards have been criticized for a lack of diversity among nominees

(CNN)Invoking the Rev. Martin Luther King's legacy on his birthday, two prominent African-Americans announced Monday that they will boycott this year's Academy Awards over a lack of diversity among nominees.

Filmmaker Spike Lee and actress Jada Pinkett Smith posted separate messages Monday saying they would not be attending the February 28 ceremony. The Oscars have drawn criticism (http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/14/entertainment/oscars-so-white-protest-nominations-feat/) after an all-white slate of major nominees was announced Thursday for the second year in a row.
