Physician Gary Slutkin spent a decade fighting tuberculosis, cholera and AIDS epidemics in Africa. When he returned to the United States, he thought he'd escape brutal epidemic deaths. But then he began to look more carefully at gun violence, noting that its spread followed the patterns of infectious diseases. A mind-flipping look at a problem that too many communities have accepted as a given. We've reversed the impact of so many diseases, says Slutkin, and we can do the same with violence.

Study: Gun homicides, violence down sharply in past 20 years

Overall gun violence is down but there does seem to be an increase in larger shootings. Many were inspired by other mass shootings. Then they inspire other shootings. So it spreads. But as a percent of all gun deaths, mass shootings are a tiny fraction.

Colorado is an "open carry" state. Had one just last week. Most mass shootings occur where there are lots of targets- schools, workplaces, shopping centers. Chosen more for the targets and availability than the gun laws.

After shooting started in the parking lot. Because there were people with guns in the area? Didn't stop it. People who want to kill will find a way to kill and probably don't worry too much about the consequences.
