University of Kansas professor placed on leave after using racial slur in class discussion

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/11/22/university-kansas-professor-placed-on-leave-after-using-racial-slur-in-class/?intcmp=hpbt3

A white University of Kansas professor was placed on paid leave Friday after using a racial slur during a class discussion about race.

The university told Andrea Quenette, 33, an assistant professor of communication studies, that five people had filed discrimination complaints against her, she told the Lawrence Journal-World. Quenette said she requested a leave of absence and the university said she will have to remain off campus during the administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

Quenette came under fire after she used a racial slur during a Nov. 12 class for graduate students who teach undergraduate classes. The class met the day after a contentious university-wide forum on race and discrimination moderated by Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little.

Quenette has been a teacher at the University of Kansas for two years. She said that diversity in the classroom was on the syllabus, and a student asked how they could talk about race issues in their own classes. The conversation turned to how the university should address racial problems.

She said she pointed out that racist incidents on other campuses, including the University of Missouri's Columbia campus, have been very visible, and used the slur when comparing the University of Kansas to the other incidents. Quenette said she could have apologized "in the moment" if anyone had responded, but no one did, so she continued the discussion.

But Amy Schumacher, a first-year doctoral student who was in the class of nine white students and one black student, said most "just shut down" after Quenette's using the slur. Schumacher said she believes Quenette "actively violated policies" during the discussion, hurt students' feelings — including the one black student, who left "devastated" — and has a previous history of being unsympathetic to students.

Some students took to social media to address the situation. Jyleesa Hampton, a first-year communications graduate student, is one of the main tweeters of the #FireAndreaQuenette campaign and told the Journal-World that students rushed to her office to explain what had happened.

People talked about being scared to return to class, scared to have her in charge of their grades,” Hampton said. “I don’t think it will be a safe environment for me” teaching next year, she told the newspaper.

Quenette told the newspaper the campaign has been “very hurtful.”

Quenette is relieved of all teaching and service responsibilities, university spokesman Joe Monaco said. He said administrative leaves are often used "to address substantial disruptions to the learning environment or concerns about individuals' welfare" while investigations are underway.

Quenette said she hopes to secure an attorney to represent her.

She also said she believes academic freedom protects her comments and that they were not discriminatory.

"I didn't intend to offend anyone," she said. "I didn't intend to hurt anyone. I didn't direct my words at any individual or group of people."

funny there is no mention of the context it was used in.. While I am a firm believer in freedom of speech a university has the right to fire staff that they feel dont contribute to a learning environment. From the article posted the professor could have said somethig innocuous as "in other universities black students have been made to feel uncomfortable by the use of the word ******", which i feel would be proper as she is merey giving a factual account of current events. Or she could have said something as offensive as " what's that ****** doing in my class?". Point is we don't know...

No sorry. There is no objective rule for the use of that word. Some black people are cool with it being used in a referential context some aren't. Here's two black people arguing on CNN about using the word after Obama used it. The black analyst goes off when the anchor says the word in an obvious referential context. He says it at 2:20.

Some years from now perhaps black people will issue a memo when they've all agreed on rules for the word.

You cannot have an educational discussion on the history of race without discussing the term.

No one felt uncomfortable or was "devastated". Racialists or should I say opportunists are looking for any situation whether real or imagined to promote their cause for not equal rights but rather more rights, to line their pockets with cash and advance their careers.

At least this one actually said the word, even though this is still entirely stupid.

I remember twentyish years ago someone got in trouble locally for using the word "niggardly" during a lecture. The students heard it correctly, they just thought the root word must have some racial insult attached to it, too. When they heard the definition they got even MORE offended. "Now you're saying black people aren't generous!?" I can't recall if the people complaining were black or not, though (at universities you often run into one group being offended on another's behalf because... social justice).

Would this have been an issue if she wasn't white?

Yes. But not if she was liberal. Vanderbilt professor Carol Swain (black) received complaints from white liberal students for her "racial sensitivity" and her ability to post was initially blocked by Facebook after they received complaints.

Oh if that's not rich, RONPAULFORUMS censors the "N" word. WTF. That's racist, I might be a black man, and as such I have rights to use that word, only stupid crackas can't say that word.

I hope these poor children can hide in their respective Safe Spaces if their proffs ever have them read "The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn"(actually 11th grade level lit, but that's another story) or almost any other well-known classic novel in the English language prior to 1900 or so. I bet having the poor kids read and discuss the characters in "The Brothers Karamazov"(Dostoevsky) would make them wet themselves... (ZOMG! Existentialism! ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN religious themes and primary characters! )

On January 15, 1999, David Howard, an aide to Anthony A. Williams, the mayor of Washington, D.C., used "niggardly" in reference to a budget.[3] This apparently upset one of his black colleagues (Howard is white), identified by Howard as Marshall Brown, who misinterpreted it as a racial slur and lodged a complaint. As a result, on January 25 Howard tendered his resignation, and Williams accepted it.[4] However, after public pressure from LGBT individuals, an internal review into the matter was brought about, and the mayor offered Howard the chance to return to his position as Office of the Public Advocate on February 4. Howard refused but accepted another position with the mayor instead, insisting that he did not feel victimized by the incident. On the contrary, Howard felt that he had learned from the situation. "I used to think it would be great if we could all be colorblind; that's naïve, especially for a white person, because a white person can't afford to be colorblind. They don't have to think about race every day. An African American does."[4]
