New Haven, CT — In a ridiculous move, ostensibly designed to protect citizens from theft, the New Haven police department has begun stealing things from innocent individuals.

Yes, you read that correctly.

The New Haven police department announced its plans this week to start stealing things from unsuspecting residents who leave their doors unlocked. If you are missing your valuables, it may not have been taken by a private thief, it could have been stolen by a public thief.

According to Lt. Herbert Sharp of the NHPD, police are now taking private property from unlocked cars and bringing it to the station. This, of course, is done so to “deter theft.”

Sharp assures the public that when his officers are opening the door to your property and removing your belongings, with no search warrant and no probable cause, that this is 100 percent legal. “It’s called a caretaker,” explains Sharp.

Civil asset forfeiture has really changed the culture.

Unlocked doors and unlocked cars are *wonderful* things, markers of a society functioning at a high level, well-tuned and in top form. Why? High trust! Trust is key to everything.

So the police are conducting a massive operation to destroy mutual trust, and thus civic-mindedness, and thus society. Nice.

Stealing from you in the guise of protecting you is the definition of the word "government". This is nothing new.

Very true! This particular scheme has even more, additional "bonus" destructive side effects, though. Taxation is theft, of course, but at least it's predictable(ish) and in it's own separate compartment. This is impinging on everyday life. It's like random, senseless violence. Just imagine how destructive it is, every time you misplace something, to have to wonder "did I misplace that, or did someone just randomly walk into my house and steal it?" That is a horrible feeling! That is a horrible way to live! That is why people love into nice neighborhoods, so they will never have to entertain that doubt. There's just no question -- this is a good neighborhood, no one is going to even consider stealing anything from anyone else; the chances are vanishingly, vanishingly small. Now some deranged cops go around and burglarize 20 houses, increasing the crime rate infinity percent, and all that trust is shattered. The bubble is popped. That has really bad long-term consequences. Promotion of r; destruction of K. They have not thought this through.

Horseshit.

You will be arrested if, while "protecting and serving" you by stealing your shit, the asshole cop rooting around in your car finds some "suspicious leafy substance" or an "illegal" firearm.

Step #1: Hire a lawyer.
Step #2: Have the lawyer call the New Haven Sheriff's Dept. and report a break in and theft on your behalf. Provide the note left behind as evidence as to the thieves identity and where the stolen goods may be recovered.
Step#3: File a lawsuit.
Step #4: Go to the press.
Step #5: Ca-ching.
