Yesterday a US Naval destroyer sailed within 12 miles of an island in the South China Sea newly built and claimed by China. The Chinese claimed a 12 mile exclusion zone and have complained over the US "violation." Is the US military "keeping the sea lanes open," as the US government claims, or is it looking for another fight halfway across the earth?

FWIW, I'm not. Nor am I a part of "we".

International maritime laws state that artificial islands do not increase a nation's boundaries. China is.in the wrong on this one.

China is asserting it should have the primary regional influence when it comes to the South China Seas, duh. The US is stressing the rules here where it suits the result they want, namely its own dominance over other powers, in every part of the world be it over land or sea.

The fact remains that a country can reasonably claim a security interest when it comes to 'international waters' that are closer to their region of the world. If China or Russia sent ships to the Gulf of Mexico (also international waters), the US and Mexico might have a right to be concerned. Who made the US the unitary (and selective) enforcer of international maritime laws?
