Bernie, Bullies, Artists, and the New Voodoo Child
“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”
— H.L. Mencken
October 16, 2015—Just prior to the Democratic debate this week I had the good fortune of stumbling across this Bernie meme:
(Bernie beer meme, check it out here: http://www.voicesofliberty.com/article/bernie-bullies-artists-new-voodoo-child/)

I gotta admit, bringing beer into the equation is a marvelous way to drive home the point about the ills of socialism. I have a lot of friends who are currently “Feeling the Bern” so-to-speak. Many of them also love beer. Broadening the thrust of the meme, I’d say none of my Bernie-and-beer-loving friends would frequent a bar or want to live in a country where it was acceptable to chug somebody else’s beer. At some point, they’d understand that “somebody else’s beer” would eventually mean their beer. And knowing many of my friends, that would surely constitute grounds for fisticuffs.

Which brings us back to the ills of socialism. Now, I don’t know if Ludwig von Mises had the chugging-of-somebody-else’s-beer analogy specifically in-mind when he wrote that “socialism is the alternative to any system under which men can live as human beings” and that “socialism leads to the disintegration of society,” but you get the point. Also, for all of you beer-lovers out there, remember: first, Bernie will come for your deodorant (https://reason.com/blog/2015/05/26/bernie-sanders-dont-need-23-choices-of-d). Then Bernie will come for your beer…

Seriously though, the larger point is that all of the problems in the U.S. today are because we’ve had too much socialism, not too little. Do we really want more of a system where more of the hard-earned fruits of our labor — whether deodorant, beer, or income — can be forcibly confiscated and redistributed to others? The place we’re gonna “Feel the Burn” is right through our wallets– as if the federal government hasn’t burnt through them enough already.

Speaking again of “Feeling the Bern,” let’s take a closer look at Bernie. It should be poignantly clear that Bernie would be a disaster economically – even worse than his more recent predecessors. Basic economic law always wins, and Bernie is on the polar-opposite side of it. Socialism fails because it distorts prices and destroys economic calculation. Social disintegration follows. Socialism may appear to work in the short run, but the problem is that it’s not sustainable in the long run. Bernie is completely wrong on economics. You can read more about why “Bernie Sanders is Wrong” here (http://tomwoods.com/d/bernie.pdf). And if you want to help send Bernie to economics classes, you can do so here (https://www.gofundme.com/gw6d6y44).
