View Full Version : Obama proposes forced national service

Under the plan, middle and high school students would perform 50 hours of service a year.

In addition, Obama proposed a tax credit of $4,000 to help make college affordable but to receive the credit, the student would be required to clock at least 100 hours of service a year.

The ideas are part of a wider-range plan that would include quadrupling AmeriCorp and doubling Peace Corps volunteers, which Obama said is essential in helping the nation meet goals and restore the nation?s worldly standing as a leader.

?Your own story and the American story are not separate; they are shared,? Obama told a crowd of about 900 people, mostly students. ?And they will both be enriched if we stand up together, and answer a new call to service to meet the challenges of our new century.?

The crowd gave Obama enthusiastic applause. Sean Ransick, a junior at Cornell, said the plan makes sense.

?I think it?s a great idea. I think it?s very innovative,? Ransick. ?I haven?t heard anything like it before. It was tough for me to get to college financially. That would have been an option and I certainly would have taken it.?

Obama, a U.S. senator from Illinois, said the plan would also seek to create a national online network to connect volunteers with service organizations. It would also create a ?Social Entrepreneurship Agency? to help nonprofits improved collaborations with government.

His campaign staff didn?t immediately respond to questions about how much the plan would cost.

?The non-profit sector employs one in 12 Americans and 115 nonprofits are launched every day,? Obama said. ?Yet while the federal government invests $7 billion in research and development for the private sector, there is no similar effort to support non-profit innovation.?

Under Obama's plan, the government has a right to steal money from college-aged kids and then only give it back if you do exactly what they say. Sounds more like a ransom than incentive!

No, socialists are big believers in public service. Ask them about the draft, and you'll find they usually think it's a good idea.... something every young American should do is serve in the military, until the Republicans run the war.

Through our history, the Democrats are always the group that starts the draft.

cindy25
12-06-2007, 11:14 PM
Socialist elites have always wanted a draft, but I don't think the average Democrat wants their child to be sent to serve in some inner city project or school. But Obama is being praised for this all over the MSM and forums-I don't think anyone has read the details.

NEW WORLD ORDER WORKFORCE........ got the below from an article.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barack Obama says he's a 'person of faith' and challenges the Church and business community to join with the government in the battle against AIDS: "At a press conference on December 1... the possible Presidential contender said, '...the network that Saddleback has helped to create has as much reach as any institutional force in our culture and has probably a wider reach around the world than just about anything that's going on right now.... I hope one of the things that comes out of this conference that Pastor Rick has emphasized again and again, is no single branch of our society is going do this alone. If government thinks they can do it by themselves they're wrong. Churches have to recognize that they've got to be partners with the government. Business has an enormous role...."

For those who don't know, Pastor Rick is Rick Warren, CFR member globalist and writer/promoter of 'A Purpose Driven Life'.

John Edwards proposed forced national service months ago and barely anyone noticed. I've had to point this out to people whenever they mention him. Sadly, neither Republicans nor Democrats are generally opposed to involuntary servitude. Just another reason we have to win this.

I love how the democrats (Hillary proposed that $5,000 handout to children for college tuition) think just giving money or credits for college is going to make things better somehow. Don't they realize that tuition will just go up $5,000? Most businesses, colleges included, don't set the prices based on cost, they set them on what the market will bear. And if the government starts throwing out handouts, the market will be able to now bear a higher price.

4000 dollars? Thats 100 dollars an acre!

Ah, I love it.

The rest of the plan will befunded using a small portion of the savings associated with ending the war in Iraq

Looks like the Iraq War will go down as the biggest fiscal policy mistake in history. All the money we are pouring into it we. When its over, everyone in town will be saying, "Now that we arnt spending this money in Iraq, lets use it for new entitlement systems"

What's happening with college now is what happened with high schools decades ago. More state control, higher costs, and everyone is expected to attend whether it's useful or not, just to keep up.

This makes me ill. It wouldn't do for me to be the father of a child who would be affected by this if Obama somehow got elected.

I wonder what the penalty for noncompliance would be...

So Obama wants to forcibly increase participation in non-profit/volunteer programs. That makes whole bunches of sense to me...

I had to do service projects in order to graduate from high school and while it was a good experience, it significantly takes something out of a volunteer project when you have to go to the person/group you volunteered to help and ask for proof and documentation that you were there and worked x number of hours. It just turns it into slavery, not charitable volunteering. :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it that way. The state manages to destroy what are supposed to be charitable activities. It's ironic that socialists talk about the goodness in every human. It's only with true freedom that people can really show their best side.

John Kerry called for mandatory national service for young people in the 2004 race, but pulled it quickly from his website once Aaron Russo started pointing it out to people.

So what's the full list of candidates now supporting forced national service?

Obama
Edwards
Dodd

Who else?

cindy25
12-08-2007, 11:15 PM
this year only Obama, Edwards and Dodd but McCain, Hillary and Biden have in the past supported it. Huck signed the pledge to expand national service but no specifics.
only RP and Romney are strongly anti-draft.

for a long time Hillary had a speech on dlc.org about universal voluntary national service; but how can anything be universal and also voluntary?

and the next Speaker of the House, Ramn Emanuel is a strong supporter of 2 years of forced slavery.

If people only knew......People support and endorse Obama thinking he's going to help our country. People also think haven't our country come a long way if we can elect an black president. I think it's great if we could see an afro-american president one day too.

But!

Before the black community, or any one else for that matter, starts to endorse Obama I think they should first hear the Malcom X speech: The House Negro And The Field Negro.

Then ask yourself, which one is Barack Obama (or Oprah for that matter)????

I think Hillary would probably be easier to beat. After RP wins the GOP nom, the Establishment will unite behind whoever the Dem nominee is anyway.

and a lot of greedy parents that want the government to pay for their children's college, by any means the government wants it.
and when there are compulsory summer boot camps as they have in Malaysia some will support that also.

user
12-10-2007, 12:34 AM
This whole college affordability problem is a great example of what Harry Browne was talking about when he said, "Government cripples you, then hands you a crutch and says, 'See, if it wasn't for us, you couldn't walk.'" Not only have they raised costs, but colleges as they are today wouldn't even be so important in a free market. So whenever someone pushes for increased college funding, they're missing the forest for the trees.

Haha, make the camps religious and half the GOP base will support it right now.
