Oh, the horror.

Why Do Hardly Any Black People Attend Famed Festival in Middle of Desert? Burning Man’s Founder Has a Theory

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2015/09/05/why-do-hardly-any-black-people-attend-famed-festival-in-middle-of-desert-burning-mans-founder-has-a-theory/

Larry Harvey, founder of the decidedly off-the-beaten-path Burning Man festival, apparently has an attendance problem.

According to the festival website, “Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance.”

The description ends like so: “In this crucible of creativity, all are welcome.”

Indeed, while the fest is pushing nearly 70,000 attendees, the problem is that one particular group of people is barely attending Burning Man — namely, black people.

The Guardian noted:

According to the most recent Black Rock city census, complied yearly by a team of academic demographers and anthropologists to determine the makeup of the festival, 87% of burners identified as white; 6% identified as Hispanic, 6% as Asian, and 2% as Native Americans (figures rounded) – on the latter of whose ancestral lands the event occurs. The smallest demographic of burners – 1.3% – identified as black. According to the census, which also measures income, this means that the temporary city is home to twice as many people who earn $300,000 a year as it is to black people.

The paper added Harvey’s theory on why this is: “I don’t think black folks like to camp as much as white folks.”

Harvey, who has black family members, expanded on his premise by invoking his take on U.S. history.

“Remember a group that was enslaved and made to work,” he told the Guardian. “Slavishly, you know in the fields. This goes all the way back to the Caribbean scene, when the average life of a slave in the fields was very short. And, so, there’s that background, that agrarian poverty associated with things. Maybe your first move isn’t to go camping. Seriously.”

It’s worth noting that first on the list of Burning Man’s “10 Principles” is “radical inclusion.”

Anything I post here would be incredibly racist. Funny, but racist. So I will refrain.Same. If a few thugs did the math they'd figure out that the cost of gas vs the drugs taken at gunpoint from unarmed liberals = profit. Add to it the likelihood of victims not calling the police and the profit margins increases.

Well, it showed his ignorance, and how stupid his theory is.

I think the music and culture just doesn't jive well with black culture. It has nothing to do with the black man's history of slavery.

Grover Norquist went the same year as Dennis Kucinich. Grover partied with "absinthe" (sure), Dennis showed up in slacks. I've been to this event twice. Learned a lot about anarchism and free exchange there. The original group was very radical libertarian, including bringing firearms. It's now filled with pro-war pro-state apologists who make me want to vomit. Between them and the sheer effing waste of resources this event is I don't know if I'll return. I can only imagine what it's going to be like now with a bunch of dumbasses running around with #resist style art. Not even cognizant that the event in itself was "resisting" effectively since 1994.

I would rather do things that matter. Like volunteering or building for charity. Cleanup local beaches instead of my "leave no trace" camp. Or feed 100 homeless families / veterans than sometimes pretentious privileged liberals who didn't bring their own food ("radical self-reliance").

That said, the artistic expression is 10/10 and the people are very friendly. Plenty of productive people who work hard in all aspects of life, and share their work. There are technologists there that work on refugee shelters and other survivalist tech. Engineers are very present who make some amazing productions. That latter part being the only reason I'd return. Last time I was going to go I was working on a weather balloon / virtual reality experience as an example.

Grover Norquist dressed for the event:

Fire, Dust Storms, and Scorching Heat: This Year's Burning Man Sounds Like the End of Days

http://gizmodo.com/fire-dust-storms-and-scorching-heat-this-years-burnin-1798662696

These types of storms are a semi-common occurrence at the festival that attracts 70,000 people each year. But the heat this time around will be exceptional. “A lot more will be burning than just the wooden figure,” National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Deutschendorf told the San Francisco Chronicle. Forecasts predict this could be the hottest iteration of the event ever. Temperatures will be in the upper 90s until the weekend when they’re expected to hit 102 degrees. According to Deutschendorf, historical temperature records show the last time there was a multi-day heat wave in the region was in 1949. And the only time temperatures topped 100 degrees during a festival day was on Aug. 30, 2007.

I think I prefer the smaller 3 or 4 day festivals like Lightning in a Bottle to a full week in the desert, but a lot of people I know say it's worth it. The bug thing is pretty weird, I guess they are just passing through this year.
