Renewed calls for gun control laws spurring gun sales

WASHINGTON — Renewed calls for more restrictive gun laws, following a succession of fatal shootings in the United States, immediately appear to be generating a boost for the gun industry.

Newly released August records show that the FBI posted 1.7 million background checks required of gun purchasers at federally licensed dealers, the highest number recorded in any August since gun checks began in 1998.

The numbers follow new monthly highs for June (1.5 million) and July (1.6 million), a period which spans a series of deadly gun attacks — from Charleston to Roanoke — and proposals for additional firearm legislation.

they are murder on scopes.. mine is badass when the scope works. can hit a dime sized target at 100 yards. :)

but when you shoot it... the scope shakes sideways.... and the screws work loose.

Yes scopes! .308s especially should have scopes. Anybody can shoot 500m with a non scoped rifle, but can your eyesight really let you hit targets out at 800m?

So yes, when you need to hit targets farther out you need a scope.

Thread lock is your friend, we have a barrett and that lesson was learned by round three. I also buy scopes with lifetime warties, vortex will repair damn near anything so will Burris. what type of scope do you have on there?

Just when I am really pessimistic about freedom in America I read news like that which really really warms the cockles of my heart.

yes! I am hopeful that the thread lock will work. I bought the gun secondhand. it is a bolt action savage with a modified stock and trigger.

I am still a novice on scopes. I need to learn how to sight them in. I know it has both red and green lights for the reticles.. but I do not know what that is for. :o

if the scope says barska on it throw it away immediately, i put one on an AK and by 120 round it was "shot". They sale laser bore sighters that you put in the bore of the rifle and it helps, you to sight it in without firing a shot for around $20-$30. you can use to get it relatively close to being sighted in, a lot better then trying at $1-$2 per round with match ammo.

I know it has both red and green lights for the reticles.. but I do not know what that is for. :o

Illuminated reticles are for low light situations. Once your eyes are dark adapted, you are relying strictly on the rods in the retina. The rods are very sensitive to photons but cannot discriminate color. Rods are more sensitive to light in the 500 nanometer wavelength (greenish) and are relatively immune to wavelengths longer than 650 nanometers (deep red). Exposure to any light with a wavelength greater than 650 nanometers will temporarily breakdown the chemicals that make the rods sensitive. Because your rods are most sensitive in the green range it takes very little energy to make the green reticle "pop". Too much green light however will breakdown the chemicals in the rods.

As I said earlier rods are not color sensitive, so the way that colors are focused on to the retina comes into play in low light situations and is dependent on the individual's eyesight. In a simple lens like in the eye, the colors are not focused at the same point.

Blues will be focused at one point and reds at another. Of course rods just see all of these wavelengths as light. The peak wavelength of green is optimal, but what if you eyesight isnt? Having a red reticle will allow you to retain you dark adapted eyesight and you may have a crisper view of the cross hairs because the red wavelength is better focused on your retina. If green works for you then go for it, but you have a fall back of the red reticle. Females also tend to see more into the red wavelengths. Of course color perception is due to cones and not rods, but maybe there is a parallel in low light situations for the girls.

Hope this helps!
