WASHINGTON—Horrifying images of Syrian refugees trying to reach Europe this past week have ignited an outcry about their plight, while casting fresh light on the comparatively few the U.S. has accepted.
Four million people have fled Syria since the crisis there began in 2011, most to neighboring countries. The United Nations refugee agency has called for 130,000 Syrian refugees to be resettled by the end of 2016.
Germany has pledged to take 35,000 by then, exceeding the commitments of other Western countries. In a policy shift, the U.K. announced Friday it would accept “thousands,” (http://www.wsj.com/articles/uk-to-take-thousands-of-syrian-refugees-vows-cameron-1441361695) but didn’t specify an exact number.
The U. S.—much farther away—has taken in about 1,500, and expects another 300 by October, the State Department said. Officials said the U.S. hopes to take more next year, potentially in the low thousands.
Aid groups and some lawmakers say the U.S., traditionally a haven for refugees, should take in at least half of those the U.N. wants to resettle in the West—which would mean about 65,000 over the next two years.

Drowned refugee boys buried in Syria; crackdown crumbles in Hungary
KOBANI, Syria/ROSZKE, Hungary | By Rodi Said and Krisztina Than
- A Syrian father on Friday buried his wife and two little boys, drowned as they tried to flee to Europe, while hundreds of migrants fled from a detention camp and escaped a train stranded under police siege in Hungary.
Hungary's hardline leader said Europeans could end up a minority on their own continent as a crackdown appeared to crumble in his own country, the main entry point for tens of thousands of refugees and migrants reaching the EU by land over the Balkan peninsula.
Hungary has canceled all trains to western Europe to prevent migrants from traveling on and seeking sanctuary in richer countries north and west.

Yes you read that right: The US is sending another $45 million to assist in Syria the same people it is fighting in Afghanistan and the same people who killed US Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya.
