“I kind of would like a government that would mind its own business more,” Paul said.

The Kentucky senator served as a keynote speaker at a Republican Party fundraiser. Tickets for the barbecue ranged from 65 dollars to a hefty $2,000 for a private reception with Paul. The Vermont GOP leader said the event was expected to gross about twenty-two thousand dollars for the party. A party, that's eager to start raising money for 2016, all while raising its profile.

“I think any time you get a national candidate to come to your state, especially Vermont, we don't get a lot of national candidates, I think it's really good. I think it's really good for the party, I think it gives the party an opportunity to get people who might not normally come to a fundraising event to come to see somebody, whether they support that candidate or not,” said House Minority Leader Don Turner.

Paul who has struggled recently in the polls has gone after frontrunner Donald Trump in recent days.

“I think ultimately, polls go up and down but I think people come to their senses and I don't think we'll end up sort of nominated a celebrity reality TV star,” Paul said. “I think ultimately people will want someone to fix the country, how are you going to fix the debt, how are we going to fix America and really allow us to thrive again?”

The party hopes Rand Paul is not the last of this 16 candidate GOP field to make it to the Green Mountain State. Next up, Senator Marco Rubio is expected in Vermont for a private fundraiser in a couple weeks. For Sen. Paul, the event is a chance to get some face time with voters for himself and his party.

“We actually lead Hillary Clinton won by President Obama. We lead Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania, Republicans haven't won Pennsylvania since 1988, so I think that's a really extraordinary thing that here's a guy that's very fiscally conservative but is also libertarian on some issues that actually might be the guy that can actually win some of these purple maybe even blue states,” Paul said.
