East Texas movie theaters boosting security, searching bags

http://www.news-journal.com/news/2015/aug/12/east-texas-movie-theaters-boosting-security-search/

By Staff and Wire Reports

Aug. 12, 2015 at 11:02 p.m.

Moviegoers in East Texas could face a longer wait to see their chosen flick on the big screen as theaters ramp up bag-checking security measures.

Some area movie patrons said Wednesday that they were not bothered by the measures, which came in response to recent shootings at U.S. theaters.

That wasn't the case Saturday at Regal Longview Stadium 14, when one patron refused to allow ticket-takers to inspect her bag. She was refused entry and received a refund.

Regal has notices posted on its ticket booth and doors informing people that backpacks and bags are subject to inspection before entry.

"It doesn't bother me," Linda Hurst, 68, of Longview said Wednesday after a Regal employee checked her purse. "I'm always glad to see it; 99 percent of the time nothing will happen, but you never know."

Employees at Regal and at Carmike 10 in Longview referred any questions about theater security to their corporate headquarters. Attempts to reach those offices Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Carmike employees in Longview would not confirm that they are actively checking bags.

The theater also has a sign at its ticket booth notifying patrons that backpacks and bags can be inspected before entry, and it has two signs that say weapons are not permitted inside the building.

Longview police spokeswoman Kristie Brian said Tuesday that police are not providing security to any area theaters in wake of recent shootings.

The most recent theater shooting that made national news ended in no fatalities, other than for the man who brought terror into a movie theater in the Nashville, Tennessee, area.

Vincente David Montano, 29, wielded a hatchet and a fake gun there Aug. 5. He fiddled with a pretend bomb. He cracked open a canister of propane, releasing gas that police think might have been intended as a bomb, and he clouded the air with chemicals.

But when he fired at officers, he shot pellets. He was fired at by a police officer and shot dead by a SWAT team as he tried to escape out a back door, police said.

The violence at the Tennessee complex came about two weeks after a 59-year-old drifter opened fire inside a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, killing two people before taking his own life.

It also happened while jurors in Colorado were deciding whether the man who killed 12 moviegoers and wounded 70 others at a theater in 2012 should get the death penalty. He was given a life sentence last week.

Longview resident Diana Anderson said she thinks area theaters' response to the violence scare is appropriate.

"With all the trouble they've had, I don't have a problem with it," Anderson, 61, said Wednesday while leaving Carmike 10 in Longview. "And if it'll keep our people safe, I'm OK with it."

That thought was echoed by a patron at Regal Longview Stadium 14.

"I agree a hundred percent," William Tillman, 26, of Gilmer said before entering the theater. "I'm tired of hearing about people getting shot up. I'm sure before too long, they'll have it like an airport where they scan your whole body. You can't hardly get out anymore."

If they are going to not allow firearms in their theater, then I am less angry with them deciding to do this. Before now, they've been disarming law abiding people but have done nothing to provide security for those folks.

Also:

People still fly on planes?

People still ride on trains?

People still drive on highways?

Yes. People put up with this shit. Not only that but they welcome it.

I hoped it would stop with TSA in the airports. No problem, I just won't fly. Fuck 'em. But I knew it wouldn't stop there. Soon I will need to be searched to use my own bathroom.

Someone should walk in with a bunch of food in their bag, and if they try to take it, raise a big stink that they aren't really checking for weapons, its all about food sales at the theater.

It won't stop a shooter at all, unless they have armed security prepared to shoot back. Just more giving up liberty for a false sense of security (and enhancing concession sales).

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150820/12445332019/tsa-movies-theater-chain-looks-to-bring-security-theater-to-movie-theater.shtml

Thanks to a string of theater-related tragedies, going to the theater is about to become as enjoyable as going to the airport (http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/aug/19/america-largest-movie-theater-chain-bag-check-policy).

Following two recent deadly incidents at movie theatres in the US, the Regal Entertainment Group – the nation’s largest movie theater chain – this week added a bag and purse check policy as a security measure in some of the 569 theaters it operates.

“Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America. Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theatres,” the chain said in a statement.

This may sound like a harmless bit of "doing something" in response to a few tragic incidents, but there's nothing really harmless about it.

First off, it subjects everyone to the same level of scrutiny -- provided they're carrying a bag of some sort. If you have a purse or backpack or (god forbid) a fanny pack, you're a potential threat. Everyone else? Free to go. Weapons tucked into waistbands or shoved into pockets will go undetected.

And, like the TSA its emulating, the security measures will be easily thwarted and ultimately useless. For every weapon the TSA brags about seizing, many more end up on planes. A recent audit of the TSA's security efforts found it missed 95% (https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150602/05474131176/study-tsas-security-theater-troupes-missed-95-smuggled-weapons-explosives.shtml) of smuggled weapons and explosives. Anyone thinking Regal's security force is going to be better trained and more thorough than the TSA is kidding themselves.

Like the TSA's efforts, this will give moviegoers the illusion of safety, rather than actual safety. An illusion might be comforting enough for most moviegoers and it's all Regal can actually offer. This move is more about PR than reality.

According to a new survey conducted by consumer research film C4, following the Nashville incident, 48% of moviegoers are willing to pay $1 or more per ticket for the additional measures. Nineteen per cent of respondents said they would pay $3 or more.

And I'm sure Regal will be more than happy to take $1-3 more from every moviegoer in exchange for a hassling a few moviegoers.

What goes through "pro Palestinian occupation" Americans minds when they see police state encroaching on them, do they know the reasons why Americans are being groped when going to airports, train stations, sports stadiums, shopping malls?

Increasingly Palestine like fear-centric police state is being gradually built around Americans, they have to know something is not going right. Terrists seem clever/commited enough for their cause that they have figured out ways to incrementally subject American tax payers, primary funders of Palestinian occupation, to what Palestinians have been subjected to for last 40 years.

My speculation is (as I have not seen any polling data on this) that before 9/11 American public supported funding occupation of Palestinians by 80/20 ratio, today it is probably about 60/40 support and after another 4-5 years of TSA/NSA Freedom state/wars costs it would drop down to 30/70. At that point, US tax payers would end funding their occupation and Palestinians would achieve Freedom, give and take 5-10 more years. Sheer speculation as uncontrolled/free US MSM doesn't seem to do much polling on this issue.
