"Staffing and services for forty field canvassers" (total for quarter) = $513,529.21

At first that struck me as insanely high, but on closer examination...

The expenditures cover 7 weeks. There were 40 canvassers.

$513,529.21 / 7 / 40 = $1834/week or $7336/month per canvasser.

If that covers both wages and expenses, that's not unreasonable.

...though I'm assuming that a "canvasser" doesn't just knock on random doors; if that's all he does, then he's massively overpaid.

They are focusing on Iowa as ground zero. Good idea.

And to think I did it for free. I really need to learn to play this "politics" game.

You start by rubbing shoulders with the right kind of people. Then, together, get others to do the work, for free, then you are more important and get more of the loot.

Most people this early in the game aren't really ready to get all of the proper training and mobilize on command in large groups to targeted areas and stay motivated enough to do it full time.

Volunteers are unreliable, for the most part. Most of the people I know that were offered a chance to go to Iowa have received thorough training already.

This is definitely not a "Youth for Paul" winter getaway situation.

Yea, that's what I'm assuming.

The "field canvassers" aren't the doorknockers, they're the guys who find and organize the doorknockers, in which case the steep price makes sense.

Say, if you divide Iowa in 40 parts, each canvasser has a pretty large area to cover. There may be considerable travel, hotel stays, renting out meeting rooms, wining and dining local notables, etc.

Must be to earn $95k a year in income and benefits (based on r3volution's post).

Since Iowa is barely very much of a first state anymore - I do not agree.
Who is the first state GOP party with a straw poll ? NOT Iowa. What state wants to fill that void left by the Iowa GOP Party . . .
They are gonna finally get around to their caucus a month later than usual, now in February 2016, and only a month before Super Tuesday -
why . . . to get an extra month of attention, with delegates decided finally still in June 2016.

They'll milk it all for the six months more of Iowa . . . so now I am convinced a blimp would cover more ground more efficiently,
and get grassroots organizers back involved on their own dime.

I hope you don't actually believe CAV is paying full time canvassers 95k a year, lol.

I know D.C. wastes a lot of money but this is a super PAC, they're not there to throw money away, its not like they're rich in the bank. I suppose the most likely super PAC to throw away cash is Right to Rise. If you knew anything about how YAL operated, you'd know Jeff Frazee knows a thing or two about stretching money.

I don't think it's just salaries, it's probably also their expenses.

Imagine if you needed to be in a different Iowa town every day for a month: hotels, dining, gas, etc; you'd spend quite a bit.

Well, that's why I included "benefits" in my statement. Not that it is really important. They could pay $1mil per if they feel like it. It's up to them.
