Possible threat prompts lockdown at Coast Guard bases

Two U.S. Coast Guard facilities in the New York area were placed on lockdown Friday afternoon after a retired cop took photos of people on Staten Island holding what appeared to be assault rifles, sources said.

The lockdown order has been lifted at Coast Guard Sector New York, at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, New York. Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, at Fort Hancock in Highlands, New Jersey, was also placed on lockdown, but it was no clear if the order was also lifted there.

Fort Wadsworth and Fort Hancock are open to the public as part of the National Park Service's Gateway National Recreation Area.

LIVE VIDEO FROM SKYFOXHD

A retired police officer took photos of some people at the parking lot of Midland Beach on Staten Island holding assault weapons. The retired officer said the weapons may have been paintball guns, but sent the photos to the NYPD's Intelligence Bureau as a precaution.

Heavily armed NYPD officers set up checkpoints on the approach to the outbound Outerbridge Crossing and the Goethals Bridge, which connect Staten Island to New Jersey. Officers appeared to be visually checking vehicles that were heading to New Jersey. The checkpoints caused traffic to back up for miles on the West Shore Expressway and the Staten Island Expressway all the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Armed Coast Guard police officers could be seen patrolling outside Sector New York's buildings.

It is not clear if Coast Guard Station New York, a small-boat station less than a mile away from Fort Wadsworth, was also locked down.

Police officers could also been seen driving around the parking lot of the Staten Island Mall.

Officials did not reveal the nature of the threat.

The lockdown comes a day after a gunman killed four Marines at a military facility in Tennessee. Federal authorities are investigating that shooting as a possible act of terrorism.

The Feds can put 3 or 4 goons with replica firearms in the middle of a city and then take it over militarily like its nothing.

Exactly. Just merely saying there is someone with a military-style weapon seen walking around would lockdown an entire city like the movie, The Siege.

They should have known better, no way could there be an evil assault weapon in NY, the SAFE act outlawed them because no one needs more than seven rounds and we all know that laws protect us....
