Not this stuff again....... I'm pretty sure Jesus would not have allied with the IRS.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk69ygaPIeEBernie may be right. It isn't necessary to "align with the IRS" to be a socialist. Although I wouldn't guess whether Bernie realizes that or not. If the question is, would Jesus frown on someone who is hoarding food for the next week while sitting by watching someone else go hungry today, I believe the answer would be "yes." And that goes for all basic needs. HOWEVER....if the question is, would Jesus want the government to put a gun to your head to force you to share your food with those who have none, I believe the answer would be a firm "NO."

Actually, the Roman tax system didn't work like that. Tax collectors drew no official salary. They collected the official tax and turned that part in. The rest of their salary was whatever they could charge on top of the tax. So, let's say the tax is $10. A fair thing would be to charge $12, keep the $2. But the unfair thing would be to charge you $200, send in the $10, and keep the other $190. That's why tax collectors were considered the lowest form of life. Jesus was against the way they operated. It's noted over and over in the Gospels.

Zacchaeus (Luke 20) was a short man who was also a tax collector. He climbed a tree to get a view of Jesus. Jesus stopped him and said, "Zacchaeus, come down. I'm going to your house." Zacchaeus was converted and vowed to pay half his wealth to the poor and repay four times above what he had taken in taxes.

You need to do some additional Jesus homework, Bernie.

Socialists are statists.

It's IS, not WAS.

And the only reason people say things like this is because they don't believe in Him. If you believed in Him you would know He is most definitely a Monarchist of the highest order.

It is human nature to imagine Jesus as championing whatever things you hold the most dear. Socialists do it, homosexuals do it, conservatives do it, anarchists do it, hippies do it, etc. etc. etc.

What people rarely do is actually read the Bible and exegete it.

As funny as that may be, images of Jesus offend Biblical Christians. I'm not saying you can't be offensive...offend away. But I'm just letting you know.

Edit: Also, that image looks like a White European. But Jesus was an olive skinned Jew. There's another example of how people imagine Jesus in their own image.

And then how would Bernie fund his precious programs? A dilemma.........

Not worshiping idols. The only diff between Christians and Muslims in regards to that is Christians won't try to kill you if you doodle Jesus.

You know, some people who frequent this website might actually work for the tax department.

Some of these people might be people who have been here a long time.

Obviously, the IRS has so many employees, I'm sure everyone has a neighbor that works for them.

You do realize Ron Paul thinks the IRS should be abolished, right?

There will always be people who collect taxes. Just like any business, someone has to handle the revenue.

Even if the income tax was abolished you'd still need a tax collection department.

Even at the state level where most taxes are collected and set by cities and counties "in theory", it's the state agency that collects the taxes and then redistributes the funds to the various localities. It's simply more efficient that way, especially now that everything is electronic.

At least that's how I heard it works from this programmer friend of mine who works for the tax department.

Well since you put it that way, I guess we really do need the IRS. Who else is going to seize and sell your one and only home, causing you to be homeless, because your tax bill is higher than your cash in hand?

I've always thought Jesus wanted some structure in which there was wealth redistribution, but still voluntary. A voluntary socialist is still a socialist.

Regarding the video......I sure wish that libertarians who quote parables would ensure they explain that most parables are more importantly about a spiritual truth than the literal truth of the story. Parable of the talents is about Christians being given more responsibility to take care of God's work the more they show they can handle it. It's not literally about making money. I see the point, but me thinks you may not convince many Christians who have a doctrinal understanding of the parables with this video.

To anyone out there who thinks that Jesus was a socialist, aka someone who did not believe in the concept of private property, consider the following:

Matthew 20:1-15

1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.

5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.

6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?

7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.

8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.

9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.

11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,

12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.

13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?

14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.

15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

As far as why Sanders would say something like this given that he, at best, only sees Jesus as a rabbi (teacher), the answer is to justify his own paganism in the eyes of American Christians who probably lean socialist but are otherwise attempting to practice the true religion (and failing given their lack of understanding of the gospel). Then again, Sanders might also be trying to bull-bait the Evangelical wing of the GOP. Either way, good old Bernie is basking in the glory of his own senility.

Why, exactly?

Apart from the idolatry issue and the fact that Jesus' human nature should not be the object of worship, do you really think that the pale, long-haired, hippie, metrosexual look that has been attributed to Jesus by Methodists and Romanists is the way a 1st century native of Judah who was perfectly keeping the Mosaic Law would look?

Why you have to think in racist terms all the time.

He's would be king as we understand it plus more maybe, right? Not, "not" as we understand it and something primarily that we don't. That wouldn't make sense. We claim "humanity" as our own, but the only thing truly that we can claim is wickedness. The "humanity", the values and the virtues we hold, things like righteousness and true kingliness belong to God, not man.

Not "human" king, not "god" king. Just king. King of Kings to be precise.
