My great-grandfather was a Volga German. He came over in 1911 because of the increasing taxes by the Russian government and the rescinded promises of not forcing military conscription. When WWII broke out in the 30's, Stalin had nearly all his extended family exterminated or sent to Gulags never to be heard from again.
