Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! ;)

Rand has been doing a pretty good job at standing up against the Patriot Act and unconstitutional government spying. This is what we want in a Senator.

Many people have posted that they have donated to Rand in the past couple of weeks due to Rand's strong stand. We need a thread to track donations.

If you have donated in the past two weeks, let us know in this thread.

If you want to show support for what Rand is doing, feel free to register your support with any size donation and post it in this thread.

Rand Paul's Statement on NSA Spying

I have fought for several years now to end the illegal spying of the NSA on ordinary Americans. The callous use of general warrants and the disregard for the Bill of Rights must end. Forcing us to choose between our rights and our safety is a false choice and we are better than that as a nation and as a people.

That's why two years ago, I sued the NSA. It's why I proposed the Fourth Amendment Protection Act. It's why I have been seeking for months to have a full, open and honest debate on this issue-- a debate that never came.

So last week, seeing proponents of this illegal spying rushing toward a deadline to wholesale renew this unconstitutional power, I filibustered the bill. I spoke for over 10 hours to call attention to the vast expansion of the spy state and the corresponding erosion of our liberties.

Then, last week, I further blocked the extension of these powers and the Senate adjourned for recess rather than stay and debate them.

Tomorrow, we will come back with just hours left before the NSA illegal spying powers expire.

Let me be clear: I acknowledge the need for a robust intelligence agency and for a vigilant national security.

I believe we must fight terrorism, and I believe we must stand strong against our enemies.

But we do not need to give up who we are to defeat them. In fact, we must not.

There has to be another way. We must find it together.

So tomorrow, I will force the expiration of the NSA illegal spy program.

I am ready and willing to start the debate on how we fight terrorism without giving up our liberty.

Sometimes when the problem is big enough, you just have to start over. The tax code and our regulatory burdens are two good examples.

Fighting against unconditional, illegal powers that take away our rights, taken by previous Congresses and administrations is just as important.

I do not do this to obstruct. I do it to build something better, more effective, more lasting, and more cognizant of who we are as Americans.

I stand with Rand

The interesting thing is, if we had no idea who Rand was, we would probably all throw in a few bucks to any Senator that would put up this kind of fight against illegal government spying.

To all of the naysayers who did not like the ad, this is from a Politico article:

Paul got some back-up Friday when a super PAC supporting the Kentucky Republican released a bombastic ad declaring (http://www.politico.com/story/2015/05/rand-paul-super-pac-patriot-act-118402.html)“Sunday, Sunday, Sunday” would be the “biggest of brawl for liberty of the century.”

Republican hawks are nervous that Paul could win.

And I have donated $20.16 to him this week; will be donating more, but have to ration it out...sigh...

I obviously cannot donate, but this thread should get a bump. It seems it's up to the small donor libertarians to fund Rand's campaign. Hopefully the campaign will use their hard earned money wisely. Early signs point to that they do... IMO the campaign is much more professional than Ron's 2012 bid. An dual emphasis on online and states groundwork / Get out the vote is more cost effective than major ad blasts on TV. (although they probably will do that as well right before Iowa and New Hampshire)

While I am in agreement, my question is this: do we really expect NSA to stop? How shall we know whether they do? Given the history of deception, lies, and the overall atmosphere of utter mistrust, how can one rest on the matter? At this point I do not see how it is possible, so anyone with better knowledge than mine is welcomed to speak up. The technology is there. Expecting them not to use it is measurably less reasonable than throwing a 17 year old healthy male into bed with his dream-girl and expecting him to sleep.

ETA: For that matter, do we expect anyone to stop enforcing PATRIOT in any of its dimensions? This is a serious question. These stooges have become acclimated to acting in accord with powers that technically no longer exist. Will investigations that began a week ago and carried out under provisions of PATRIOT now be technically infeasible for prosecution? Will the stooges suddenly stop all their now-illegal activities? Is there a list in place by which they will train people away from such exercises of power? What of those who have come into their positions since PATRIOT and have functioned solely under its provisions? Will they be excessed from the workforce? I cannot for a moment imagine that this would happen for any of numerous reasons. But if they are to be re-tasked, to what possible work?

What I drive at here is that the enactment of PATRIOT and its full-bore implementation for more than ten years has set into place an absolutely enormous amount of machinery. How many miles will an aircraft carrier traveling at flank speed require to some to a dead-stop?

Finally, why should we expect the stooges to respect this official terminus? They pay the Constitution no mind, nor any to our rights. Why would they respect this edict that diminishes them?

Finally^2, I would suggest we all keep a keen eye open for a "terr'ist" event now, either openly false-flagged or something the Theye allow to carry forth as a shot across Congress' bow, warning them to return into place that which they demand. Perhaps I'm just gone completely mad, but I can readily imagine a scenario such as a dozen large malls across the nation being shot- or blown-up in the coming months, reinstatement of PATRIOT or perhaps enactment of even greater powers soon to follow, just as we unanimously rushed into war with Japan after Pearl Harbor.

To date, Theye have never ceded ground... at least not for long. If this sunset really means a loss of territory for Themme, expect to see something that will spur the nation to reinstate what Theye have lost, and given Themme even more than before. This has been the pattern in ever bolder bites. I am seeing no reason this should of a sudden not happen.

Finally^3, OK PATRIOT goes the way of the dodo, but do any of the other enacted bills such as various NDAAs provide redundant language such that business shall carry on as usual. Recall that the language does not have to be identical. It need only be interpretable in a way that allows the same activities to continue unabated. This is the classic pattern of courts, policy makers and so on WRT law. They make it say what they want it to say through "interpretation", which is one of the major examples of the hazards of the common abuse of language. Meaning of words is now so dilute and broad that it is impossibly easy to construct sentences that have essentially no meaning whatsoever, and are thereby interpretable to mean damned near anything one might wish. Coupled with the imprimatur of "state authority" and we immediately see what a primary tool dilute language becomes in the hands of usurpers. And so it has been.

Very dangerous times.

What a convenient username. 'R' fits for "Ron" or "Rand". Excellent.

On the down side, it also fits for "Ru".

Damn.

If one of the very worst provisions of the Patriot Act – which the government has erroneously and illegally interpreted to gather the phone records of each and every American – expires, we’ll have Senator Rand Paul to thank.

And the truth is, we can’t thank him enough.
...
By single-handedly standing in the well of the Senate and literally placing his body between the American people and the cretins who claim the “right” to spy on them, Sen. Paul is performing what is in effect – albeit not literally – an act of heroic civil disobedience unprecedented in the history of our nation. He is our Horatius at the bridge, and every lover of liberty – indeed, every ordinary American, libertarian or not, who values the rule of law and the Bill of Rights – owes him a great debt.

Paul is running for President, and there can be no doubt about the risk he’s taking here. With a phony “reform” bill providing cover for our cowardly legislators, and the leaders of his own party taking out after him hammer and tongs, Sen. Paul is placing his political future on the line for an overarching principle. Regardless of what one may think of Sen. Paul and his politics, we must honor – and support – him in this fight in any case.
