Bomb squad destroys pressure cooker found in vehicle parked near US Capitol

The vehicle’s owner has been arrested and charged with ‘operating after revocation’, police said

A US Capitol police spokeswoman said a bomb squad safely destroyed a pressure cooker that was found in an unattended vehicle on Sunday. The vehicle was parked on the National Mall near the US Capitol; the vehicle’s owner was found and arrested.
Police lieutenant Kimberly Schneider said Capitol police officers on routine patrol spotted the parked and unoccupied vehicle on a street on the mall west of the Capitol around 5pm on Sunday.
Schneider said the bomb squad destroyed “items of concern in the vehicle including the pressure cooker” around 7.45pm, after temporarily closing off the area on the long Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Schneider said the vehicle’s owner was found and identified as Israel Shimeles of the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia. Shimeles was arrested and charged with “operating after revocation”.

DC Police: "We suspected you of planning a terrorist attack, so much so that we blew up your cooking utensils, but there was not so much suspicion that we didn't feel unsafe grabbing the items out of your car before disposing of them. DC Police has made bad decisions in the past and even executed "suspected" unarmed black mother Miriam Carey (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?429504-Entire-House-Of-Reps-Gives-Standing-Ovation-To-Cops-After-Killing-Unarmed-Mother&) who had taken a wrong turn with her daughter sitting besides her in the car.


But today there may have been extra hightened alert.

New York area airports were hit with a rash of ​anonymous reports of international arrivals carrying chemical weapons​ Monday​, ​with fighter jets scrambling, in one instance, to escort an Air France plane in to JFK, law enforcement sources said.
Air France Flight 22, which originated from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, was immediately taken to a secure area of the airport called the “hijack site,” law enforcement sources told The Post.
The flight, with 165 passengers and 11 crew members on board, landed shortly after 10 a.m. It was taken to an area that’s out of the public’s view.
All cargo was removed first before the passengers were taken off and taken to a secure area, where they were to be told more information about these unplanned safety precautions, sources said.


There have been at least two similar threats called in about flight coming in to JFK on Monday, law enforcement sources told The Post.
One is a Saudi Airlines flight and the other is American Flight 131, which was scheduled to touch down just before noon from Birmingham, England.
A Delta flight coming in to Newark on Monday was also saddled with a chemical weapons tip, while an EWR-bound cargo plane was reported to be carrying a bomb, law enforcement sources told The Post.
