Call for Rachel Corrie killers to be brought to justice

The Arab League has called for the killers of American human rights activist Rachel Corrie to be brought to justice. The 23-year old was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer in March 2003 as she tried to stop occupation forces from destroying Palestinian homes in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. In a statement issued to mark the 12th anniversary of Corrie's death (https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/news/middle-east/17510-international-solidarity-efforts-continue-12-years-after-killing-of-rachel-corrie), the Arab League said that the driver of the bulldozer fully intended to kill the young peace activist. It noted that an Israeli court acquitted the Israel Defence Forces of murdering the American citizen after her family filed a lawsuit accusing the authorities of killing their daughter deliberately. Israel's Supreme Court upheld a decision (https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/news/middle-east/16949-israel-no-compensation-due-to-rachel-corries-family) issued by a lower court in 2012 acquitting the army of the killing.

she should have stayed home in AZ

Do you agree that her tax dollars were being used to demolish people's homes and kill little children?
If yes, she did not have moral obligation to do anything besides staying home?

Her parents seem less understanding.

No Justice for Rachel Corrie -- or Palestine
03/16/2015
Indeed, it was the United States that urged the Corries to press for justice in the Israeli courts, though, in 2006, the U.S. Departments of Justice and State filed a brief (http://ccrjustice.org/files/us_amicus_brief-AS-FILED.pdf) opposing our lawsuit in Washington on behalf of the Corries and Palestinian victims against Caterpillar, the U.S. corporation that sold Israel the bulldozers knowing that they were being used to commit international law violations. (That case, brought by the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Ronald A. Peterson Law Clinic at Seattle University School of Law, together with the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, was dismissed.) The U.S. has yet to make a public statement in reaction to last month's Israeli decision.

After\ filing the case in Haifa, Israel, in 2005, the Corries traveled back and forth to Israel for 15 hearing dates spread over 16 months in 2011 and were present both for the delivery of the district court decision in 2012 and for the Supreme Court hearing in 2014. After the verdict the Corries said (http://rachelcorriefoundation.org/blog/2015/02/12/statement-from-corrie-family-in-response-to-the-israeli-supreme-courts-dismissal-of-appeal-in-wrongful-death-of-rachel-corrie), "Our family is disappointed but not surprised. We had hoped for a different outcome, though we have come to see through this experience how deeply all of Israel's institutions are implicated in the impunity enjoyed by the Israeli military."

With Israel's dismal track record (http://www.yesh-din.org/cat.asp?catid=2) of providing justice to victims -- including both Palestinian and U.S. victims (http://ccrjustice.org/files/US%20HRDs%20Injured%20and%20Killed%20updated%20201 4%202.pdf) -- it is no wonder that Palestine has recently joined the International Criminal Court (ICC). The lack of proper investigations across the board demonstrate that Israel is unwilling, if not also unable, to conduct thorough, credible, and transparent investigations into crimes by its military.

Revival of “My Name Is Rachel Corrie” Stirs Controversy Yet Again

BY Patrick Pacheco | February 17, 2015
Charlotte Hemmings as Rachel Corrie.
More than ten years after her death at the hands of the Israeli Defense Forces, Rachel Corrie, a young American from Washington, continues to be a political football in large part because of a play, “My Name Is Rachel Corrie,” which was pieced together from journals and e-mails she left behind. It was recently announced that the 2005 play, developed by the actor Alan Rickman and the journalist Katherine Viner, would be revived this spring at the Culture Project in downtown Manhattan. The announcement came just days after Israel’s Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit filed by Corrie’s parents holding the IDF responsible for their daughter’s death.

After a world premiere in London at the Royal Court Theatre, which received strongly positive notices, it was announced that the one-person play would transfer to the New York Theatre Workshop, a prestigious non-profit downtown venue where the musical “Rent” had begun. However, after theater board members and religious leaders expressed concerns about the anti-Israeli emotions stirred up by the play, the executives at the New York Theatre Workshop announced that they were delaying the production. The Royal Court bluntly asserted that the NYTW was in fact cancelling the production out of intimidation. Tony Kushner, Vanessa Redgrave, and Harold Pinter decried what they considered censorship.

And?

It is understandable but there should be some sympathy for her too as she has to stand behind the first man of the sole super power in a complex unraveling world being puppted around like there is no tomorrow.

My dad used to say "You can't get blood out of a carrot." Not mixing metaphors, but just his vegetables. Grew a pretty good garden though.
