Those silly conspiracy theorists were right again...

Now that's a listening post! Big Brother fears as NYPD attaches microphones to lampposts to listen out for gunshots... but they can also record your conversations

By Christopher Brennan
21 March 2015

Technology now in use by the New York Police Department may be picking up stray conversations.

Three hundred ShotSpotter microphones are being placed in high crime areas of the Bronx and Brooklyn, with the aim of alerting police immediately when they overhear the sound of gunshots.

However, the devices pick up more that just the bang of shots being fired in potential crimes, and evidence from conversations they've listened in on has been used in court.

The ShotSpotter system works by sending a few seconds of audio to police departments along with location information after a potential gunshot system makes it through a filtering process

Audio recordings from ShotSpotter have been used to corroborate testimony that led to convictions in a 2011 Massachusetts murder where a voice was heard shouting 'No Jason, no Jason!' before shots were fired.

NYPD officials and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a pilot program for the microphones earlier this week.

Sensors in seven districts of the Bronx have already begun working, and the devices will be turned on in ten districts of Brooklyn on Monday, according to the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/17/nyregion/shotspotter-detection-system-pinpoints-gunshot-locations-and-sends-data-to-the-police.html?_r=1).

New Street Lights To Have “Homeland Security” Applications

High-tech system to include speakers, video surveillance, emergency alerts

Paul Joseph Watson

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

UPDATE: Presumably in response to this article being linked on the Drudge Report, the company behind ‘Intellistreets’, Illuminating Concepts, has now pulled the video from You Tube entirely, presumably nervous about the negative publicity that could be generated from concerns about street lights being used for “Homeland Security” purposes – their words, not ours. We have added an alternative version of the clip below, but it may be subject to removal at any time. The video is still available on the company’s website.

New street lights that include “Homeland Security” applications including speaker systems, motion sensors and video surveillance are now being rolled out with the aid of government funding.

The Intellistreets system comprises of a wireless digital infrastructure that allows street lights to be controlled remotely by means of a ubiquitous wi-fi link and a miniature computer housed inside each street light, allowing for “security, energy management, data harvesting and digital media,” according to the Illuminating Concepts website.

Flashback #2:

Feds Deploy National Spy System of Microphones Capable of Recording Conversations

Hidden in plain sight: The next level of NSA snooping will detect dissent via ubiquitous audio sensors

Paul Joseph Watson & Alex Jones
Infowars.com
November 11, 2013

The revelations of Edward Snowden shone fresh light on NSA spying targeting the American people, but what has gone largely unnoticed is the fact that a network of different spy systems which can record real time conversations are already in place throughout many urban areas of the United States, as well as in the technology products we buy and use on a regular basis.

These systems are no secret – they are hiding in plain view – and yet concerns about the monolithic potential for their abuse have been muted.

That lack of discussion represents a massive lost opportunity for the privacy community because whereas polls have shown (http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/05/poll-public-supports-nsa-spying-on-their-email-neighbors-and-foreign-leaders/) apathy, indifference, or even support for NSA spying, anecdotal evidence suggests (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9gtV-rSyEc) that people would be up in arms if they knew the content of their daily conversations were under surveillance.

The dystopian movie V for Vendetta features a scene in which goons working for the totalitarian government drive down residential streets with spy technology listening to people’s conversations to detect the vehemence of criticism against the state.

Such technology already exists or is rapidly being introduced through a number of different guises in America and numerous other developed countries.

And we are paying for it.

Now, if there was secure circuitry that made logs of everything but gunshots recorded so interested citizens watchdogging the surveillance society, that might be justified. Gun violence in cities is pretty off the chart and often unreported so there is some purpose served within crime fighting.

I found out today these are already installed in Memphis, TN and connected to the Real Time Crime Center. Gun shot automatically makes them rotate towards sound OR they can be manually operated. Volume control, no matter how the manufacturer spins the capabilities, is controlled by the operator.

Just wait and see what this will all end up being in another 20 or 30 years.

The future is not what they're taking in, but what they are putting out, into us.

I wonder if those microphones can intercept a really close gun shot? :D

Watson or one of his Colleges covered this technology 2 or 3 years back , of course
the info was lauded as heretical, now it's out in the open.
At the time this was a more advanced system of triangulation
(using mulitple locations to PINPOINT mathematically, the shot origin ).
This is probably the same thing but they may not want that
information readily available.

I'm assuming a coordinated assault against these 'listening' devices
would entail some kind of hybrid muzzle suppression system or silencer,
in conjunction with multiple 'mimickers' (starter pistols, engine backfire,
Motley Crue CD's etc ) activated simultaneously, either remotely
or with cohorts in various locations to jam the processor.
I'm guessing someone would probably obtain a shotspotter system
and proceed testing from there.

I'm wondering how this constant surveilance system isn't considered by the NYPD
as being an unconstitutional invasion of privacy as Ma. admits right here:

"Audio recordings from ShotSpotter have been used to corroborate
testimony that led to convictions in a 2011 Massachusetts murder
where a voice was heard shouting 'No Jason, no Jason!' before shots were fired. "

For this shotspotter to work as they say it does, it is recording 24/7 ,
likely capable of picking up the footsteps of crickets within a
1/4 mile.

This, and fear of attacks on drones are why the Gov is on the current massive
gun grab, they will not stop until every rifle, assault rifle, scope, handgun, shotgun,
cross bow, sling shot, kitchen knife, rock, club has been removed from
American citizens.

From purely practical point of view: It would be cheaper if they simply announced that they are using everyones cellphones as gunshot listening devices... and they also can be used to record your conversations... and anyone near you.

Newark and I think East Orange NJ have had these things for a few years now. It hasn't reduced crime at all.
