Washington (CNN)As Rand Paul presided over the Senate floor Wednesday morning, Democratic Leader Harry Reid took a few moments to thank the Kentucky Republican and ophthalmologist for helping him with an eye injury.

Reid, who now wears special dark glasses, said Paul has "has been so kind and thoughtful and considerate and visiting with me, giving me encouragement and some expert advice as to what he's seen in the past and giving me hope for better sight out of my right eye."

Reid suffered a concussion and broke several ribs and bones in his face during an exercising accident on New Year's Day, resulting in severe limitation of sight out of his right eye.

"I really appreciate it very, very much. I want the people of Kentucky to know how thoughtful and considerate and kind you've been to me over these months," he said.

Is he trying for a kiss of death? That might work with Reid's party, but not with the GOP. They actually do tend to see acts of kindness as good things - even if it's to the other party. (Just don't go fixin' the eyesight of any Mexicans or terr'rists.)

Rand is a better person than I am, if for no other reason than I would be suggesting treatment via a sharp stick.

No problem. Tell them he takes the Hippocratic Oath seriously.

If that doesn't impress them, tell them he was trying to get that log out of the guy's eye.

The 'exercising accident' happened on New Year's Day, must have been part of a New Year's resolution.

That's not allowed unless the creature involved happens to be composed of both ends of a horse.

I really doubt offering advice and support to Harry Reid on a medical issue was a political calculation. If you're an eye surgeon and one of your coworkers is going through what Harry Reid is going through, reaching out to them is something probably any doctor would do.
