Why would a US military vet join anti Iran jihadi group like ISIS when US official stance is to be on the side of Iraq-Iran alliance against ISIS?

A U.S. Air Force veteran has been arrested on terrorism charges in a plot to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group, federal prosecutors said.
A grand jury indicted Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, of Neptune, New Jersey, on charges of attempting to provide material support to a terrorist group and obstruction of justice.
He will appear Wednesday in federal court in New York City and is now in custody. It isn't immediately clear whether he had been assigned an attorney who could comment on the charges against him.

Simply paying taxes to the US is aiding ISIS, what difference does it make?

I fail to see how a US court has jurisdiction to charge somebody for attempting to travel to from Egypt to Turkey.

How is ISIS a threat to anybody? It seems that all they do is shoot and upload training videos, there seems to be a new one replaying on the news every other day. How do they have time to conquer nations and conduct holy jihads? Seriously!
