"Ultimately a combination of diplomacy and pressure will be needed to bring about a political transition," he said, adding: "Military pressure particularly may be necessary given President Assad's reluctance to negotiate seriously."
Kerry arrived in Riyadh where he met with GCC foreign ministers yesterday to brief them on the progress of nuclear talks with Iran and discuss multiple conflicts raging in the Middle East.

They want Syria under the US thumb, so Iran has no one to aid them when the US attacks Iran. The sanctions on Russia over Ukraine (and possible wider war there) is likewise designed to distract Russia so it can't aid Iran when the US attacks it. But an independent Syria is the most immediate obstacle blocking expanded US militarism in the area.

Why, the ISIS pressure (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?459503-ISIS-Revolution-Muslim-2-0&) is not enough to topple Assad?

If you knock out Assad, then ISIS will take over and have a larger base for their operations. If the US wants to deal with ISSI, they actually need Assad and Iran on their side. Iran is currently helping the Iraqis in the battle for Takrit- the effort to drive ISIS from there. The US used to think they wanted to get rid of Assad but despite the statement by Kerry, they have since changed their minds. The winds of the Arab Spring changed directions from they way they hoped things would go. Pretty much went bad from the US perspective when they knocked out Lybia. That greatly increased chaos in the region not just in the Middle East but Africa as well and the resulting civil war released tons of high tech weaponry to many countries in the region.
