GOP megadonor Foster Friess took a bite out of Sen. Rand Paul’s foreign policy in a note he wrote the senator shortly after a lunch date.

In an email obtained by the Washington Examiner, Friess urges Paul to alter his approach against extremism in the Middle East.

“Rand, I respect your reluctance to put Americans in harms way by providing doctors, nurses, and mechanics to fix busted axles, technicians to deactivate booby traps, anti-tank weapons and personnel to protect them. (Anti-war liberals can support these measures.) But I wish I could dissuade you,” Friess wrote.

Weird - I actually found the full email/letter to be super respectful, especially the closing statement:

You are respected by many, Rand, including myself; your leadership in engaging in the war could be historically pivotal.
God Bless,

I share with you your angst of having an American killed there, but I feel exactly the same heartache if a Kurd is killed. As far as I am concerned, when a Kurd is killed, an American is killed.

Maybe you have an idea as creative as the one you expressed at our lunch to transport all the armored personnel carriers scattered throughout small towns in America directly to Erbil. Cool idea—Hope you can make it happen. Lindsay is not interested in its being part of what he is doing, however.

Somehow, that was both a slap in the face and awesome at the same time. :D

Respectful yes. But that's about it. It's like me asking you politely if I could fk your wife.

Here's the e-mail condensed:

Rand, you have to be a warmonger to get my money.

I was wondering what day the luncheon between Friess and Rand took place and I found the date here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/02/18/huffpost-hill_n_6708908.html

In an email he sent to Paul on Feb. 11, after the senator had taken him to lunch on the Hill, Friess pointed specifically to the question of whether the U.S. should directly arm Kurdish forces in Iraq

That's the same day Rand went on Fox news and said this:

Megadonors are irrelevant. Kochs and Adelson dropped hundreds of millions on a loser.

It's more correct to say that they are necessary but not sufficient to win the election.

In fairness to Rand, he has talked about helping the Kurds in the past. He has specifically talked about the defense of Erbil for quite a while.

The subject has been brought up on this forum before: ;)

I've looked around fairly extensively, including the thread you linked, and I've seen nothing from Rand about arming the Kurds prior to his statement on February 11.

I did find articles where he calls for U.S. air strikes to protect Americans at the U.S. consulate in Erbil.

excerpt:

While linking the Benghazi attack to a possible siege of the Erbil consulate, Paul told Reason.com that it would be "hypocritical" of him not to support U.S. air power in northern Iraq to prevent ISIS attacking Americans in the Kurdish city.

But he pointed out that there was also “an argument to be made that they [diplomatic personnel] shouldn't be there" in the first place.

That's probably what I was remembering. It sounds like he suggested sending some armored vehicles to Erbil when he spoke to Foster's Freeze, but that would not be public.

Rand Paul should call him out and ask Friess what his plan for all the armed Kurdes in Syria, Iraq and Iran is after they defeat ISIS? Put down their guns and go home, or do they go back to being enemies of the US? Or is Friess proposing that the US back a Kurdish state?
