OKLAHOMA CITY (KWTV/CBS) - State Sen. Mark Allen is pushing Senate Bill 671 to legalize chemical castration of violent sex offenders.

The procedure, already in effect in two other states, could be in Oklahoma before the end of the year.

The Oklahoma version of the bill would allow someone with a first conviction to voluntarily undergo the hormone treatment program as part of terms for early release.

After a second conviction an offender would be required to undergo treatment.

Allen said he has studied the process in other states.

"The inmate has to go through counseling before going through the process," Allen said. "I think they've had about a 90 percent success rate. If somebody wants an early release from prison they can go through the process."

Attorney David Slane has represented more than 500 sex offenders and believes chemical castration could work. He said it already has with some of his clients.

"I remember one in particular who told me he went to his doctor voluntarily," Slane said. "He used this hormone therapy and, as he said, 'It cured me. I no longer have the thoughts. I no longer have the sex drive.' For years afterwards he had never reoffended. So to me, that was proof in the pudding. There may be something here."

Both Florida and California require mandatory chemical castration injections for repeat sex offenders.

The Oklahoma bill has a long way to go, but if passed, it could go into effect in November.

"Offenders are in jail for a reason, and if there are any options for early release then this could be one of their options," Allen said.

What if they are falsely convicted? Is it reversible?

What if they are falsely convicted? Is it reversible?

That was my first thought. I'm not sure if it's reversible.

Chemical castration is generally considered reversible when treatment is discontinued, although permanent effects in body chemistry can sometimes be seen, as in the case of bone density loss increasing with length of use of Depo Provera.[3] Chemical castration has, from time to time, been used as an instrument of public and/or judicial policy despite concerns over human rights and possible side effects.

As with the death penalty...I am against this because many people are set up, falsely accused and sentence with circumstantial evidence. I do not trust the system enough.

No he doesn't. I suggest you use the ignore function. It makes dealing with his presence on RPFs very tolerable. :) ~hugs~

How a lunatic like you got full rep here is the real question, and deserves investigation.

I don't mind, it is not like it has not already been done. :)

please report me for the aforementioned crime. or conspiracy, whatever suits your fancy.

The only question is why are you still here and why do you have full rep.

I don't trust the system, but as a moral principle this would be my second choice if we can't execute rapists.

The government shouldn't be providing incentive or disincentive to medicate.
The government shouldn't be involved in medicine.

If you want out early for a crime committed there should be community service options.

No, sex offenders is too broad.

DNA-confirmed rapists? Sure, but there would have to be guidelines. If some woman is held down outside her work late at night, that is pretty open and shut. Sex at a college party, less so.

Yeah, they sure are.

And the state never makes a mistake and jails, castrates or executes an innocent man.

Agreed.

Chalk me up as one who is willing to entertain castration for beyond a doubt rapists and repeat child molesters.

Anyway, this was killed in the Senate committee anyway.

Are you a Constitutionalist? Chemical castration, it seems to me, violates the prohibition against "cruel or unusual punishment" on that piece of parchment. (8th ammendment)

The same people who protect us from terrorists? These people who have to write laws to protect us from ourselves, and must sneak laws through because we dont know any better? The very same people who brought us the post office - a floundering entity despiting this being the age of catalog/internet shopping?

Yea, sure... give them the ability to chemically castrate people. What could possibly go wrong there? Glad I dont live in OK - this coming from someone who lives in IL.

Someone please define both what a "Sex Offender" is and is not!

Sex Offender is:
- Rapist
- Child Molesotor

Sex Offender is NOT:
- Two teenagers sexting
- Mooning someone
- Public Urination

Sex Offender to them is:
- Gay
- Bisexual
- Consentual Teenage Sex with more than two years of age difference
- Public Urination
- Mooning Someone
- Sexting at any age
- Sexual Harassment
- Sexual Discrimination
- Premarital Intercourse
- Sexual Positions that are not "Missionary"
- Telling "Dirty" Jokes
- Adjusting a protective Cup during Sports Play
- Scratching ones Balls
- Observing anything pornographic in nature
- Kinks and Fetishes
- Watching the Discovery Channel animal mating rituals
- Taking shit out of context: IE: Hey baby, want me to "rotate your tires for free with your lube job"?
- ObGyn, even as a Medical Profession
- Owning a Greek Statue
- Observing Nude Art
- Breast Feeding
- Smoking / Consuming Alcohol during Pregnancy (all prescription drugs are just fine)

So, anyone wanna add or clarify any misconceptions on that list? To someone, something will be "sexual" in nature and the individual will be slapped with the label "sexual deviant". Might just as well call them a "Witch" and burn them at the stake.

What do you have for a serial child molester who didn't use their member to commit their crime? Chop of their hands like in Saudi Arabia? their tongue? or both? I don't know the answer but chemical castration scares the hell out of me especially when you consider what qualifies for a sex offender these days.

this is somewhat alarming, cruel and unusual punishment yes

Oh, boy, here we go with the credential questioning...

I understand your premise and would agree in principal. However, these are child molesters and rapists we're talking about. I have very little sympathy for these types of people, whether they have a legitimate "disease" or whether they choose that lifestyle. If you disagree with that, fine, we'll leave it at that. Regardless, their actions are heinous, the acts they commit to innocent people. No more heinous than a punishment such as this. A punishment that may actually truly fit the crime for once.

As for all of the caveats people are discussing, what if it were defined as the perpetrator absolutely positively 100% was proven they were the aggressor in the situation, or more specifically, multiple times? Naturally, our definitions of "sex offender" would have to be re-written and perhaps with varying degrees...

Oh, Lord... And this is why this is a bad idea. We cannot trust our "elected" officials to write clean checks, let alone do any of the above.

I now oppose this.
