Students in the state of Illinois can now be legally compelled to give their teachers access to their social media accounts through a new law that’s intended to crack down on cyber bullying, but it raises concerns about personal privacy.

“Children need to understand that whether they bully a classmate in school or outside of school using digital devices, their actions have consequences,” State Representative Laura Fine (D-Glenview), a co-sponsor of HB 4207, said (http://www3.illinois.gov/PressReleases/ShowPressRelease.cfm?SubjectID=2&RecNum=12475) when Governor Quinn signed the bill in August. “Students should not be able to get away with intimidating fellow classmates outside of school.”

Not every parent in the Land of Lincoln is at ease with the law, however. “It’s one thing for me to take my child’s social media account and open it up, or for the teacher to look or even a child to pull up their social media account, but to have to hand over your password and personal information is not acceptable to me,” Sara Bozarth, a parent, told the Fox affiliate.

Just astounding. This moron doesn't understand that these kids are not "students" when they are not in school? Another reason to forego a government education - they do not own your kids just at school; they own them everywhere.

Like every government solution, this will do absolutely zero to stop bullying and will probably increase it.

Listen, government. If you think a kid broke a law, get a warrant and prove it. Otherwise, leave 'em alone.

(I wonder if we'll see someone comment that these parents are agreeing to this by sending their kids to a government school?)

Students in the state of Illinois can now be legally compelled to give their teachers access to their social media accounts through a new law that’s intended to crack down on cyber bullying, but it raises concerns about personal privacy.

The law — signed by then-Governor Pat Quinn in August and officially added to the books on January 1 — is reportedly now making waves after letters were sent to the parents of students last week outlining the rules.

According to school and state officials, the new cyber bullying legislation gives educators the ability to access the social media accounts of their students, if it’s pertinent to preventing any hostile online behavior, including cyber bullying outside the classroom and school hours.

Officially, HB 4207 “prohibits a student from being subjected to bullying through the transmission of information from a computer that is accessed at a non-school-related location, activity, function or program…if the bullying substantially interferes with or limits the victim's ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities or opportunities offered by a school or substantially disrupts the educational process or orderly operation of a school”

Why stop there?

I say we go after the Administration, and the Power to know all of theri dirty secretive backroom deals. All of their instructions without suffering their own indoctrination procedures. Access to the Administrators of the Administrators. See how they'd a taste of their own medicine.

Being able to access the social media accounts of students will do jack shit to counter cyber bullying. This supposed "solution" doesn't even follow. They have access to the accounts... now what? Will they be able to prove something they weren't able to prove before? You know, other than continuing to prove that the State will take any crisis and turn it into an opportunity to control us and our children even more.

Just as we frequently need to identify who the Real Terrorists are (Banksters), there does still exist a valid need for parents to protect their children from the Real Bullies. Note that I said PARENT and not School nor Teacher. The Protection of Family is NOT a responsibility of the State or any in its employ, it IS a responsibility of the Parents and Family. In order to persuade people to willingly give up their Rights, their needs to be some sort of perspective benefit or gain, and that is for them to give up their Responsiblity. Bullies in these Indoctrination Centres do exist, but the Real Bullies are the Teachers and Enforces of the compulsory educational system. Many have seen benefit in allowing that responsibility to be given up, but what they truly give up is their Rights and their only Valid Authority over thier own children.

Schools themselves are the Real Bullies.

The emotional scars of our educational system that completely displaces any self sense of identity in favor of a drone mentality comes from the methods of education. Children are indoctrinated from day one. They are stripped of any sense of self worth which is replaced completely with grades and scolding. Those that are able to repeat and regurgitate the information in schools are those that are told they should feel good and those that dont spit out the same shit sandwich they are fed are told they should feel bad. This creates the framework of long term emotional dependancy on a system of Obedience and Reward. The kids that act out in anger toward other children do so because they recognize on some level the pure fallacy of the Prussian Indoctrionation of the Slave Manufaturing Machine.

As an Illinois teacher, I know school administrators who have gone beyond this by creating essentially narc Facebook accounts, designed to trick students into "friending" them & then giving up information about bullies, partying/drugs, etc.

This seems to be the step they will take for this generation of children they are grooming to be total access as adults. So when these children become parents, they will be used to always living in a fishbowl and won't blink an eye when they are told that, for the children, it is necessary that teachers have access to their social media. For now, they seem content with getting the children to snitch on the parents through their numerous loaded questions within the curricula.

there will be a court challenge; surprised facebook didn't file it already. all they would have to do is add to their TOS something that would prohibit giving your password to govt agencies without a court order

This whole anti-bullying campaign is a crock of shit. Kids these days are too soft. They're coddled. Victimization is drilled into their heads. The message we send them is, 'you're weak. you need to be protected.'

Bullying has been going on since the beginning of time. It's only in recent history that you see kids going off on rampages as a result of it. It's because we don't do anything to mentally empower kids. We don't tell them to stand up for themselves. We let the state do it for them.

That's the way I see it.

Your second paragraph hit it on the head. Because our society teaches children that they need to protected from big bad bullies, they don't know how to actually deal with a real bully in their face giving them hell. So instead they bottle it up and feel helpless until they finally explode, unfortunately in sometimes very tragic ways. What they need is a school system that is realistic about bullying and a father figure in their life to teach them to stand up for themself and confront the bully. It's the only way it's going to get better. Running to teacher or ducking in a corner and bottling up your frustration with a bully is never going to work.
