NYPD chief who was a first responder at 9/11 dies from rare form of blood cancer linked to Ground Zero

By David Mccormack

An NYPD chief who was a first responder at Ground Zero following the 9/11 terrorist attack has died from a rare form of blood cancer believed to be linked to the incident.

Steven Bonano, 53, died on Saturday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center surrounded by friends and family, officials said.

A 30-year veteran of the force, Bonano was commander of the NYPD's elite Emergency Service Unit at the time of the attack.

It is believed he may have contracted cancer as a result of inhaling toxic materials while he participated in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site in the weeks following the terrorist attacks.

The NYPD declined to say whether his cancer was linked to the site.

More than 900 first responders have died of ailments blamed on their service at Ground Zero, officials say.

My mother-in-law was nowhere near the Twin Towers and she also died from "a rare form of blood cancer."

You have been told over and over and over that correlation does not equal causation, but even that simple concept is apparently far too advanced?

I thought the causation was incredibly obvious and no secret at all...

..that correlation does not equal causation...

By the same token, correlation does not equal absence of causation either.

There should be scientific investigation to find the truth.

9/11 death toll rises as cancer cases soar among emergency workers
More than 2,500 New York police, firefighters, ambulance and sanitation workers now have the disease

By Rosa Prince, New York
6:57PM BST 27 Jul 2014

Thirteen years after terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center, killing nearly 3,000 people in an instant, the death toll from the attacks continues to grow as thousands of emergency workers contract cancer.

Latest figures show more than 2,500 police officers, firefighters, ambulance staff and sanitation workers reported they had cancer last year – twice as many as said they had the disease 12 months earlier.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) documented 863 firefighters and ambulance workers with cancers certified as relating to their work on September 11 2001, according to the New York Post.

A separate scheme, the World Trade Center Health Program, which is run for police officers, construction workers, sanitation staff and other New York City employees and volunteers by Mount Sinai Hospital, said it had 1,655 patients with cancer out of 37,000 who worked at the site of the 9/11 attacks.

Last year, there were only 1,140 reported cases of cancer by 9/11 workers.

The curse of Ground Zero: Number of cancer cases among 9/11 responders and others affected TRIPLES to more than 5,400 in less than three years

By James Wilkinson For Dailymail.com

Published: 12:31 EST, 14 August 2016

The number of 9/11 responders and others on the scene who have been diagnosed with cancer has tripled in less than three years, it has emerged.

In January 2014 the number of people in the WTC Health Program with cancer was just 1,822. Now it's a massive 5,441, with 6,378 separate cancers recorded.

'It’s been steady for at least the last year and a half - we’re seeing new people here being certified for cancer 10-15 times week. That’s every week,' Dr Michael Crane, medical director of the program, told the NY Post.

Stricken: The WTC Health Program's list of cancer victims has risen from 1,822 in 2014 to 5,441. Dust and smoke from the attacks has been linked to more than 50 types of cancer

The WTC Health Program provides medical monitoring and treatment for more than 48,000 people who responded to, or were victims of, the 9/11 attacks.

Those people are now at risk of more than 50 types of cancer that have been linked to the smoke and dust created in those attacks.

Victims can claim money from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, although it only made its first cancer payout in October 2013.

Long-time firefighter Ray Pfeifer, 58, is one of those stricken by the attacks: he now has Stage 4 kidney cancer that has spread throughout his body.

He was off-duty when the planes hit, but rushed straight to the scene and ultimately spent nine days working and sleeping at Ground Zero.

And he stayed at the site for a further eight months to find the remains of his team at Engine 40/Ladder 35 on the Upper West Side, 12 of whom were killed when the towers fell.

Hero: Firefighter Ray Pfeifer (pictured, center with Jon Stewart, receiving the key to New York) now has Stage 4 kidney cancer. He says many 9/11 responders use his cancer hospital

He ignored his coughing and shortness of breath until 2009, when a pain in his hip turned out to be a baseball-sized tumor. He has since undergone 11 surgeries.

And now he regularly visits the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he finds himself in the company of other responders.

'I see cops and firemen there,' he told the NY Post. 'It's not unheard of to see five-to-ten people who worked on the pile getting treated for cancer.'

As well as the 48,000 people on the books of the WTC Health Program, there are 16,000 people on a separate program run by the Fire Department of New York.
