Tony Parker performs the 'quenelle' with Dieudonne M'bala M'bala

President Barack Obama didn’t join world leaders in Paris on Sunday for a march honoring terror victims, but he is playing host at the White House on Monday to French basketball player Tony Parker, who was once pictured doing a Nazi salute with a notorious anti-Semite.
The president decided not to attend the “Unity March” in Paris, which drew 1.5 million people and more than 40 world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Obama remained in Washington, D.C., and on Monday is hosting Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs at the White House to honor them for their victory in the NBA championship.
Parker posed with Dieudonne M’bala M’bala, a French man branded as an “anti-Semite and racist” by the French interior minister. They were both performing the “quenelle,” a Nazi salute popularized by Dieudonne.
The “quenelle” is performed by many anti-Semites in France to avoid the country’s ban on the traditional Nazi salute.

French public radio takes legal action against the latest new antisemitic remarks by comedian Dieudonné

A report by France2 television last Thursday showed Dieudonné joking with the Holocaust during a show at a Paris theater. ‘’When I hear Patrick Cohen, I think, you know, the gas chambers ... Too bad," he said, triggering laughter among his fans.

Richard Malka, a lawyer of the French radio said ‘’it is unthinkable that in 2013 such statements are made."

"By stigmatizing Patrick Cohen of his real or perceived religion and regretting the disappearance of the gas chambers, Mr. M'Bala M'Bala (the official name of Dieudonné who is of Cameroonese origin) is guilty of the offense of incitement to hatred,'' he said.

Spurs guard Tony Parker apologizes for using alleged Nazi salute
December 30, 2013

Parker pleaded ignorance about the meaning of the “quenelle," described by critics as a reverse Nazi salute and the creation of Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, a French comedian who has openly mocked the Holocaust and supported Iran's hostile policy towards Israel.

"While this gesture has been part of French culture for many years, it was not until recently that I learned of the very negative concerns associated with it. When l was photographed making that gesture three years ago, I thought it was part of a comedy act and did not know that it could be in any way offensive or harmful," Parker said in a statement released by the Spurs.

"Since I have been made aware of the seriousness of this gesture, I will certainly never repeat the gesture and sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding or harm relating to my actions. Hopefully this incident will serve to educate others that we need to be more aware that things that may seem innocuous can actually have a history of hate and hurt."

A friend of Parker’s told the Daily News Monday that while Parker had not been aware of the meaning of the gesture until recently, he had already distanced himself from the comedian, declining to attend a performance Dieudonne had invited the French national basketball team to attend last summer.

“He didn’t want to be associated with his views,” said the friend. “Tony is one of the most decent, honest and responsible players, but he has not in any way supported hateful political positions and has kept away from this increasingly hateful rhetoric. He wants to do what’s right, and his statement reflects that accountability and a willingness to learn from his mistakes.”

The Simon Weisenthal Center says it accepts Parker's apology.

All of a sudden my respect for Obama just shot up a little. The "quenelle" is not a Nazi salute. It's an "up yours" to the ruling class. This is the Nazi salute.

Okay. I just read the history of the quenelle. Why is it considered a Nazi salute? Because the French version of the Southern Poverty Law Center says it's a Nazi salute. Seriously. This is stupid. It's like someone decided to say flipping the bird is a communist salute.

Claim that this arm gestureis a "nazi salute" seems about as credible as claim that "Obama is an anti-semite".

The issue with this comedian really highlights the hypocrisy of the sudden euphoria for free speech in France, considering authorities wanted him arrested (I think he's already banned from performing in France) for his remarks.

After the Charlie Hebdo (http://www.vox.com/cards/charlie-hebdo-attack/what-is-the-charlie-hebdo-attack) killings, people around the world united in the name of free speech. But now, according to a Wednesday report in The Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/14/dieudonne-arrest-facebook-post-charlie-coulibaly-paris-gunman), French authorities arrested virulently anti-Semitic comedian Dieudonné M'bala M'bala for a Facebook post — one that appears to sympathize with the Charlie Hebdo attackers.
Dieudonné has a long history of provocation — he's been arrested at least 38 times (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/11/world/europe/for-hateful-comic-in-france-muzzle-becomes-a-megaphone.html?_r=0) for violating French hate-speech laws. His routines are replete with anti-Semitic jokes and songs. He claims that Jewish "slave drivers (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/03/world/europe/concern-over-quenelle-gesture-grows-in-france.html)" secretly run France and has said that "the big crooks of the planet are all Jews (http://www.salon.com/2014/01/10/dieudonne_mbala_mbala_anti_semites_favorite_comedi an_partner/)." So this Facebook post allegedly sympathizing with the Charlie Hebdo attackers is pretty par for the course. Here's the full text of the now-deleted Facebook post that prompted his most recent arrest, translated by thenon-profit Index on Censorship (http://www.indexoncensorship.org/2015/01/opinions-protected-right-freedom-expression/):

After this historic march what do I say...Legendary. Instant magic equal to the Big Bang that created the universe. To a lesser extent (more local) comparable to the coronation of Vercingétorix, I finally returned home. You know that tonight as far as I'm concerned I feel like Charlie Coulibaly.

Most of the post appears to be supportive of the free-speech march in Paris that happened on Sunday.

A 16-year-old in Nantes, France, was arrested last week for posting a cartoon on Facebook that mocks the Charlie Hebdo killings..
The cartoon shows someone holding a copy of Charlie Hebdo and being struck by bullets. Electronic Intifada posts what is most likely the offending cartoon (it had been shared widely on social media), a takeoff on one of the more notorious Charlie Hebdo covers, accompanied by the text, “Charlie Hebdo is shit. It doesn’t stop bullets.”
