KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii (AP) — President Barack Obama marked the end of more than a decade of combat in Afghanistan by paying tribute to America's military, telling troops on Christmas Day that their sacrifices have allowed for a more peaceful, prosperous world to emerge out of the ashes of 9/11.
At an oceanfront Marine Corps base in Hawaii, Obama told troops that while tough challenges remain for the U.S. military in hotspots like Iraq and West Africa, the world as a whole is better off because American troops put country first and served with distinction. He said Americans and their president could not be more thankful.

Perhaps he was inspired by John Lennon -- "Merry Christmas (The War is Over)". It would also guarantee most Americans' attention is focused elsewhere. By the time they realize something has happened, it will be time to be distracted by the pretty fireworks.

Doubt it that John Lennon would imagine a world with freedom train where innocent children are droned routinely.

It is almost as retarded as Bush's... "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"

The commander in chief should be commanding his troops or at least be stationed in the same country that the men are fighting in. Are any of the generals making the calls actually on the battlefield or near the front? lol

Let's see. Anyone else see a pattern? Start off with 1 number, "surge" to a ridiculously unsustainable number, then reduce to a more "manageable" number and declare the war over.

Thirteen years and $1 trillion later, the U.S. is preparing to pull the vast majority of its combat troops out of Afghanistan by year's end, as the U.S. and its partners seek to turn the page on a bloody chapter that started the day that al-Qaida militants struck American soil on Sept. 11, 2011. From a peak 140,000 troops in 2010, the U.S. and NATO plan to leave just 13,500 behind for training and battlefield support.

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan assumed full responsibility for security from departing foreign combat troops on Thursday, a day after Afghan army mortar shells killed at least 20 civilians attending a wedding party in volatile southern Helmand province.
The move will test the readiness of 350,000 Afghan forces who will bear responsibility for fighting increasingly organized Taliban insurgents.
The U.S.-led coalition troops formally ended their combat mission more than 13 years

However, about 13,000 foreign troops, mostly Americans, will remain in the country under a new two-year mission named "Resolute Support" to train Afghan troops.
"I want to congratulate my people today that Afghan forces are now able to take full security responsibility in protecting their country's soil and sovereignty," President Ashraf Ghani said in a speech to mark the handover.
Afghan army mortar rounds killed at least 20 civilians and wounded scores attending a wedding party in Helmand on Wednesday, provincial officials said.
