Many of you may be joining friends and family over this Christmas holiday, so I thought it'd be fun to give you a little analogy to try out on your republican friends...
Killing a cop is just like killing an abortion doctor - you can disagree with the morality of what it is that they do, but you shouldn't kill them.
It gets you away from being labeled supportive of the cop killers while re-directing the conversation towards the morality of what it is the police do. This puts them on far less favorable ground. For example:
Abortion doctors take the lives of babies, but they also perform other functions related to women's health that are morally acceptable.
American police incarcerate more people than any other country taking away their liberty. They also fine them and take away the fruits of their labor. Then they label these people for life which makes it harder to enjoy a productive life. Of course, they also try to catch murderers and thieves (they're just not as good at that as they are at kidnapping and robbing part.)
It's funny, because once you get these folks arguing against you, they almost begin arguing FOR the abortion bombers. Remember, you are arguing against the killing of police.
They may try to play the moral equivalency card by saying that the fetus is innocent while the police only go after criminals. Now, you are arguing about the morality of the laws that the police are enforcing. :) In most cases, the people who police deal with are not hurting anyone else - they are only engaging in an activity that is not approved by the State. Whether that be drugs, driving too fast, not wearing a seat belt, or hanging out on a sidewalk. It's pretty obvious that the police are the bully arm of the State's power over us. Many of the actions they engage in are immoral. But that doesn't mean it's alright to kill them. They've got it in their heads that they're performing a valuable service - just like the abortion doctor. Our job is to fix the laws to make the immoral acts they commit illegal. ;) Merry Christmas!
