"While the MPAA has asssigned CITIZENFOUR a rating of R, recommendation that no one under 17 be admitted without a parent or guardian, IFC Center feels that the film is appropriate viewing for mature adolescents. Accordingly, we wil admit high school-age-patrons at our discretion. Not only do we feel the film is suitable for teens, we feel it is essential viewing for anyone who may vote in the next election."

Holy shit! Something good came out of NYC? I guess the intent of the MPAA is to keep children forcefed a bullshit stream of "privacy is bad" propoganda, and anything that says anything to the contrary, just slap a RESTRICTED label on it so the obedient brainwashed fedbook addicted children dont ever learn about another perspective.

Does anyone know the content of this film? Does it have strong language or anything that usually earns an R rating for a film?

Was it rated R for political reasons, or is it a typical R film that NYC just feels is important?

It doesn't really matter, just curious.

Idiots. Giving it an "R" rating will only cause high school students to want to see it more.

Rating is for language. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4044364/

Ratings are guidelines- not mandatory.

I'll +rep anyone who can give me a link to a torrent of this film. I've been searching for months. I don't live in North America, so I can't attend any of the showings.

I'm not going to call Conspiracy Theory on this, because MPAA is a bit idiotic at times.

They rated Kings Speech "R" because the king's speech impediment involves a lot of "F" bombs. There's no sex, no violence, no adult situations or anything. My mother in law asked if she could take my son, he was 12 at the time, I'm like, "YES!" "Go ahead!!"

There's more sex, violence, gore, and everything else in most PG-13 Movies! How a movie like King's Speech can be rating R which is the equivalent of movies which are almost pornographic or extremely gory and violent just shows how the MPAA is out of touch with reality.

Too many F Bombs can cause an R rating, it's just plain stupid.

I normally use commonsensemedia.org as a "guide" when deciding what's appropriate for my kids. It will tell you in detail why they feel it's for that age, how many f bombs, if there's any nudity, or adult situations, etc. And there's also kid reviews and parent reviews if you want more opinions. Although I put less weight into the individual kid/parent reviews as everyone has their own compass on these things, but sometimes it's nice just to see what the parents are saying when I'm on the fence.

For example commonsensemedia.org put kings speech at 14 years old (they usually lean a bit conservative), but most of the parent reviews go from 10 to 12 years old.

R-rated documentaries are rarely hosted by the major theaters. They know what they are doing.

I don't know if it's still on Netflix but I recommend checking out this flick, which discusses the arbitrary guidelines the MPAA follows when administering a rating:
